For those with a deceased parent please read- I need advice (long)

Original post by paintbrush91

My dad, whom I was very close to passed away a couple of years ago after a long and painful illness. I know my wedding day will be painful in the sense of him not being there....walking down without him, no father/daught dance ect...
As a result of this, I did not want a large wedding. I was hoping for a smaller affair-a celebration of our love -but in a simple way that would remove some of the sadness for me. However, my fh has a huge family and they must have everyone there including inlaws ect. I have tried explaining my feelings to them, but they do not understand....Not that I expect them too. They feel I have to move on with my life. I can understand they do not want to cut their guest list and hurt feelings, so I have agreed to the 'big day'. But, now I am left with trying to get through it! lol I would like to know how anyone in my shoes has or will handel it?
Also, how are you remembering your parent? A good friend of mine suggested I carry a rose down with me place it where he would sit..but I do not think I could do that emotionally. Maybe a flower somewhere not in my direct view. thanks for any help

Many people liked that very much! It was different!

I like the way you worded it on the invites.

I lost my dad 7 years ago. My sister just got married in June. The rabbi who married them, married my parents and said some nice words about him. I also included my dad in our toast, but in an uplifting way. They skipped the father daughter/ mother son dance. Also, inJewish tradition both parents walk you down the aisle so my mom walked my sister down the aisle.

As for invitations, they did not mention my dad. I do not feel comfortable doing this. So I am going to put, Shelly, daughter of Esther and the late Jerry.

It will be a bitter sweet day, but I know my dad is with me always. My FH is a lot like my dad adn I always tell him that he is the best thing my dad ever gave me. He is with me and will be there on that day.

Hope this helps.

Dh's father died before he was born...so things were a bit different for him...but his 'step' father (his mom and him never married but they were together for a long time) also died...

we honored his father in the program...and we chose a day that honored him...

and for the mother son dance...they danced to In My Life by the Beatles...search for the lyrics...it is very fitting for people who have lost people close to them...

here they are:

There are places I’ll remember
All my life though some have changed
Some forever not for better
Some have gone and some remain
All these places have their moments
With lovers and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life I’ve loved them all

But of all these friends and lovers
There is no one compares with you
And these memories lose their meaning
When I think of love as something new
Though I know I’ll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I’ll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more
