** FORCED TO MOVE OUT ... selling NEW furniture

** FORCED TO MOVE OUT ... selling NEW furniture

My husband and I just moved out of our parents house into our first apartment in AUgust. Thinking we would be here for a long time we bought quality furniture that we would take with us to our first home. However, last night our landlord told us her daughter needs to move back home and we have to move out, obviously.

In august, we bought

A beautiful leather L Shaped couch from Lazyboy, with recliners, the whole 9 for 3,000. We would sell it for 2,000 even though it would break my husbands heart.

Also, we bought a cape cod dining set from fortunoffs for 1,500 and would sell that for 1,000.

We have a futon that is actually comfortable because the mattress is high quality - we spent 500 and would sell for 300.

Armoire, dresser, and bed from IKEA that we would sell as well.

If you are wondering ... we are not quite ready to buy a home so we have to move back to his parents house.

Im so sad but hopefully I can allow someone else to purchase my beautiful furniture at a discount ... everything was bought in august . FM me for details, pics, etc.

Best

i just wante to say that your landlord can't just make you leave so soon--they require giving you at least a 30 day notice if you are doing a month to month lease. whether or not the daughter needs to move back in...they do require giving you advance notice....its the law and you are protected. it should give you time to scour some apartments so that you won't have to move back home and keep your furniture!

check out craigslist! don't let the landlord bully you into leaving so quick....you can let prospective landlords know that you need to move quick and can give a security deposit once the landlord gives yours back. (if you had one)

i hope you don't have to give up your furniture -- sounds like you purchased quality stuff!

I agree I would make sure they are not doing it illegally becasue they are supposed to give you notice. I am sorry this happened to you and hope you can find something else soon.

I wanted to chime in as well - the landlord can't just kick you out. If you have a year lease, he has to wait until the year is out. If you have a month to month lease, he needs to give you 30 days notice. I'm sorry, this *****.

at the very least call and see what a storage unit would cost for a month or 2 until you find a new apartment! that might work out to be the less money then would you would lose on selling the furniture!

That's so stinky! Have you looked into the price for a storage unit?

definitely... my father owns buildings in BK multi families-- so from personal experience....

1- you DONT need to move out

2- You can stay and not pay rent

3- the eviction process takes about 6 months!! so dont panic---

tenants deff have the advantage here!! Also if the apartment is illegal you are in even better shape, because they cant take you to court to begin with!!

good luck and look online for more information---

So sorry to hear about this terrible situation. Did you consider putting your stuff into storage so that you didnt have to part with it so soon? So that case when the time comes that you are able to buy a house you have furniture to start with.

I agree...there are so many apartmetns out there! He can't just tell you to get out. Tell him to give you the 30 day notice in writing (and to be honest that is you being nice if you have a year lease, b/c that is what a lease is a contract that says you can live there for a year) Once you have that I am positive you can find another place in a month! Then you don't have to sell all the nice furniture you bought. It can go to another place!

Sell your stuff on Craigs List. Ive been using it to sell various stuff - furniture, households, collectibles. Its been great!

It is true you have sometime to move out but living their if they don't want you could be uncomfortable. I would look around for another apt. and if you can not find anything why don't you put your furniture in storage for a while until you find something.

You CAN do this, but that certainly does not make for an optimal living situation when you have a hostile environment. If anything, that will just cause more headaches and you don't need that as newlyweds.

There are some really inexpensive storage units out there. Putting your stuff in storage for a little bit will probably be cheaper than the loss you'll take if you sell the furniture for so much less than you bought it for just a few months ago.

Good luck!

Wow...all riled up, huh?

Maybe the eviction process is why rents keep increasing. I can't imagine that it would be financially fair to a home-owner to essentially live for free for 6 months.

Good luck finding a place. Maybe you could find a larger place than the one you are envisioning now.

I'm going to have the same problem in 6 months.
