Formal China!! To register or not to register . . .

My fiancee and I have been going crazy with this debate - What are you or have you ladies done? Did you or do you plan to rgister for fancy China?
I'm afriad I won't use it and we could use the money on more important things.

TIA for your help, advice, etc

we did register for it but i knew i would use it. Its completely up to you and if you dont want it then dont get it. But just think of in the future too. Its a pretty pricey item so would be good if you got it as a gift now instead of buying it yourself down the line.

But if not then just register for other types of plates

I don't know... lol

I might not or the time being because there is A LOT of stuff that we NEED.

Plus.. i'm eventually going to get my mom's Lenox 14k gold china so do i really need 2 sets?

I'm in the same situation. Originally they put on the complete collection, service for 12, of the pattern we chose. We took off all the extraneous pieces and made it service for 8. FH was looking through our registry just last night, and said he wants to take it off completely and just leave the cake serving set for the wedding. I tried to convince him that no one will buy it for us anyways so to just leave it, but he seems to think that everyone's going to get us fine china and nothing else

I have a feeling the china is going bye-bye soon.

we have been torn about this as well...

on one hand i feel like china is something i would never buy for myself bc i dont know if i will def use it..so why not get it now when people will buy it for you.

on the other hand...if all of our pieces aren't bought off the registry then we will have to spend the extra money to complete the set...

not sure what we will end up doing

I did. I knew we would use it because we plan to host holidays and stuff.

BUT

I didnt register for a very expensive place seting. I registered for settings that came as more. It was 4 place settings for $150, I think. I happened to fall in love with one that was priced that way. I also registered for 16 b/c I have a huge family

I am registering for it. There is a divide between FH family and my family as to whether or not it is necessary because we won't have the space to host parties for at least 2 years after getting married. But its better to get it at your bridal shower rather than have to buy it yourself later on.

We did, we felt it would be nice one day to have a house and a china cabinet. and host holidays or a dinner party. If you feel you will never use them then id say don't bother

we registered for it. it's the one thing you will never buy for yourself. if you host the holidays, or OOT guests, you'll want to use. the first meal i cook when our house is all done will be served on our formal china because it's a special occassion.

We registered for it only because my FFIL bought us china before we even looked at it! So, we felt obligated to register for the glasses to go with it.

We're not. We're more of a casual/trendy Crate and Barrel couple and having never lived together we need TONS of stuff.

I'll buy the China after I purchase the cabinet to store it in...I'd hate to have it sitting in a box.

We are not registering for china. First of all...my brother and SIL registered for it and they got 3 place settings. So now they have to buy the others themselves. And if they don't, they better hope that their patterns don't get discontinued.

Honestly, if you put out really nice casual everydayware, would anyone really think in their heads, What the F is this? No. Nobody cares.

So my vote, nay on the china.

I might still register for it. The set I am eyeing is really expensive -- $350 for a 5-piece place setting -- but I haven't seen any others I love nearly as much. We probably WOULD end up using them often though; we entertain for our family and friends a lot. It is our dream to be the host of Christmas dinner every year.

I have 4 FSIL's and they have all told me that they'd go in together on some settings, but I worry that others will find it to be ostentatious.

There are other pricey items I want MORE, like my Dyson Animal GRRRRRR, pots and pans set, and Wusthof knife set.

Ugh decisions decisions!

LMAO...perfect example. I just checked online to see if the everyday dishes that I wanted were still available...pattern discontinued.

We did and I got all of it (except the soup bowls which are $80 bucks a pop)

DH and I come from Italian families/big holiday events/etc so it was only normal to register for it because one day we will be hosting holidays, etc.

Our settings were like $130 each but if that is too high then go for a cheaper setting. My sister did one that was $50 per setting and its beautiful. She also did nice cream colored plates as her every day plates which is very pretty and she can use it for fancy dinners!

We didn't register for formal china. We have our dishes already and registered for another set of dailies, but I know I'll never use the formal china. I DID, however, throw on a tea set that I fell in love with!

We got all our formal china as a gift when we moved in together, so we're not registering for it.

Celeste, I love that set. However, I know my FH would be totally against it...not contemporary enough for him.
