So DH and I are thinking of having a house built. That's if the land we are looking at is okay. However in order to keep the cost of construction down I was thinking of eliminating the formal living room. We dont currently have a formal living room more like a family room....... So who has one or not and why?

Re: Formal Living Room ??
I have one becasue i like the idea of having a nice room with no tv.
Also when I ahve holidays I want to be able to extend my dining room into my living room.
Why don't you do something where you can add one later on. Make sure you leave a spot for it, or will be able to put it next to the dining room.

Re: Formal Living Room ??
I guess you could say that we have a formal living room...but we call the formal living room our living room and our other living room is more like the sun room (don't ask me what the difference is, that's what the interior designer called it so I'm going with what she said )
We use both A LOT.
Do you entertain a lot?

Re: Formal Living Room ??
Currently we are not near family so our family room is big enough for us and any guests. But we are planing to move back to NY to build a home in the coming months, and as such that means big italian family gatherings, lots kids etc, so we have a basement designed large enough for enourmous family dinners eliminating the need for a formal room. But should I still have formal LR, more furniture I have to buy, dust and vaccumm?

Its really up to you. I think these decisions are best made by considering your lifestyle and desires. Do you want a room that is seldom used but available on occasion? Would you better utilize the space for something else?

We have a Formal Living room. We just built and I wanted it so I can put a pretty queen sleeper in there but french doors on it and use it also as a guest room. I also like a the formal room to sit and talk with no TV.

We just got rid of our Formal Living Room. We combined it with another room to make a Great Room for entertaining.

I think it depends entirely on your lifestyle. We have a formal LR, but I'd much prefer a HUGE kitchen/den combo room - like a great room - which lends itself to entertaining better.
When we finally get around to furnishing our LR, it will likely only be used on holidays and special occasions, especially since we have a den - that is really where we hang out and relax.

Thanks for the responses!! I def think we are giong to scrap the formal living room. It def makes more sense to just have the family room. DH will be happy one less set of furniture to purchase!!!

i really like having a formal living room to entertain in, but its certainly not necessary. if you furnish the family room so that its a bit more formal rather than totally comfortable, than i think the family room is sufficient.
however, you may want to consider the resale difference.

We have a ' formal living room' -- and I furnished and decorated the room solely because it is the first room you see when you walk in the house. We do not use it -- except for holidays.. I love it -- but would love a bigger kitchen or family room !

Thanks for comments ladies!! I seem to go back and forth, I'm making DH crazy!! But we still have 8 weeks before our house even goes on the market, and we have not even confirmed the land deal, or decided on an architect so I have time.
