My son is 5 weeks old and seems to be struggling to poop, the doctor suggested the low iron formula but I dont think it is helping. Has this ever happened to anyone else and what can I do to help him. It is so hard to watch him struggle to go and nothing happen.

Re: Formula Fed Babies
Oh, I'm sorry. That's awful.
When she was about that age, I thought Sarah had a problem pooping since she was having 1 BM every 36-48 hours. I did some research and read that reducing the iron in their diet can help as it can constipate you.
But the doctor told me that infants having 1 BM in 48 hours is normal and that she'd learn how to poop easier. They were right, she's 4.5 months now and has 1-2 BMs per day.
Jule's is three months and from six weeks to 13 weeks, we had to give her suppositories every 2 days. At 13 weeksn, she started going on her own. Now she goes without any help. It'll pass!

I had to take gabe to the doctor for that when he was a baby. I think they used to just use a thermometer (like taking a temp) and for some reason it helped.

Re: Formula Fed Babies
At about 3-4 weeks, my son was pooping very infrequently (every few days) and when he did it was rock hard marbles - sorry if TMI. It took a few weeks before my dr would change formula.
At first I would try the rectal thermometer with vaseline and prune juice (mixed with water - about 2 oz total) and none of that worked (we did this for a week or two). My dr was still not into changing the formula but I pushed and they said lets try the best out there (in their opinion) and see if it is a digestive issue. We switched to Similac Alimentum. He has pooped regularly since. The formula is a lot more expensive but worth it for my son. (He was also colic and has mild reflux which that formual is suppose to help - didn't do much for that but cured the constipation and with time the reflux and colic either went away or decreased.)

What I did with marissa is I would give her mylicon drops with her formula and sometimes I would just give it to her straight and that would help her cuz then she would pass gas and as she was passing the gas she would poop

Bryan is a bf baby but the first day we had him home he didnt poop all day and the doc the next day stuck his finger in his butt and he pooped like a champ since then. Maybe you could have the doc do that or try a thermometer- my doc said that sometimes the rectum gets a little tight. sorry if tmi

John used to have problems pooping too. He is on Similac advance w/iron. My mother told me when I boil the water for his bottles add 1-2 fresh mints leaves to the water and let it brew like a tea. Little John now poops twice a day

Thank you all for your replies. The doctor did the rectal exam but it doesnt seem to help, maybe after a few weeks with the low iron formula it will pass.

Re: Formula Fed Babies
It takes awhile for the low iron formula to work - I know it did for my daughter. I also found that taking cotton balls and soaking them in warm water and putting them on her hiney helped - even a nice warm bath would do the trick.
Good luck!

Iron based formula will definatley bind them up so will rice cereal. My dr told me to give the baby some sugar water...it worked

Re: Formula Fed Babies
OMG- my daughter(now 4) had the same problem. We had to do extensive things to get her to go to the bathroom. We tried prune juice, kyro syrup, thermometer with vasaline, mixing the formula with more water, changing formula's. There are so many remidies you can try. But when push comes to shuv- you gotta use the thermometer.
