Friday night wedding dress vs. Saturday night dress
Original post by Alyssa79
ok so i've been having this 'discussion' with a few of my friends. They all seem to think a friday night wedding you can get away with anything....such as a 'cotton' dress, sundress, pants, etc, etc. and Saturday night you can't.
I don't agree with that...I feel a a wedding is a wedding and I wouldn't exactly dress down.
So are these sun dresses or cotton dresses acceptable for Friday nights?
I was at a wedding once and saw a girl in jeans....now I would NOT want to be 'that girl' lol

Friday night vs. Sat night its still an evening wedding I would not be dressed any less. It also depends on the venue. If you were having a beachy wedding and were going for a more casual look I would say go for a cotton wedding dress etc. It all depends on the feeling you are trying to create. I would get a dress based on how formal you want the event to be taking into account the place and your own personal style...

Re: Friday night wedding dress vs. Saturday night dress
sometimes when you look at a bride's review there are people (guests) dressed in jeans or something else very casual
Friday night or Satuday night -- it's still a WEDDING and you should dress accordingly
edited to add: I went to a wedding at St. Pat's in Bay Shore and one of the BM's boyfriend's showed up in a wrinkled t-shirt because he was going to 'change later' for the reception. I'm sure him and his crappy t-shirt are somewhere in the ceremony pictures. Some people have no common sense!

I dress the same whether it be a fri, sat, sun, afternoon or night wedding unless specifically told it is a casual or black tie affair. I'm having a sun afternoon wedding and I would expect my guests to dress the same as if I were having a night wedding.

A wedding is the same no matter if its day/night, fri/sat/sun or during the week. I dont think a change in days makes it any less formal.

I do not agree at all. Fri, Sat or Sun night I would wear the same thing
now where oh where did you get that gorgeous monogram???!! LOL ;)
Now I do agree with the beach or daytime garden/outdoor wedding (i would personally make my own more casual).
As for the comment about the Friday or Sunday wedding and basically being 'cheap', I would rather have my wedding on a Friday (which i'm doing) or Sunday and put the rest of that money towards something useful...like let's say a house for instance???!! It's not a matter of being cheap...it's actually more practical or level headed if you're paying for it imo

a wedding is a wedding and they should be thought of as special whether they be weeknight weddings, fridays, saturdays, or sundays. i also hate when people think that afternoon weddings arent as 'fancy'.

I believe a night wedding is a night wedding Thurs, fri, sat, or sun...However for daytime weddings I dont think its necessary to wear something very dressy unless the invitation states this...jmo

The only difference I would make is between night and day and if day is it outside or still at a formal hall.

DITTO!!!! I am having a Sunday afternoon wedding and I expect guests to dress up in their Sunday best LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Exactly my feelings. I am having a Saturday afternoon wedding and am writing 'cocktail attire please' on the invite because I feel people may think it's ok to wear a sundress. It's not. That's not the feel I want for my wedding. My mom thinks I am crazy, no one would come to a wedding at the fox hollow in a sundress -- but as evidenced by some of the posters on this thread even, people DO think day weddings are less formal. I want to squash that notion as soon as I can - for my wedding, at least!

Re: Friday night wedding dress vs. Saturday night dress
i say it depends on the place and the time of day, not the day of the week, a day wedding is less formal than a night wedding, i wore a floor length dress to a thursday night wedding, as did most of the women there.... i wore a sun dress to a sunday afternoon wedding as did most the women there as well...

Re: Friday night wedding dress vs. Saturday night dress
J you are exactly right to tell people your dress code. I hope you have a beautiful day! I just went back and looked at the photos of the wedding I went to last week. It was in the garden of a very pretty cottage in an elegant residential neighborhood in California. I actually went out and bought new less formal clothes the morning of the wedding, I had brought a black cocktail dress and was worried I would look like an overdressed NY'er. All the women wore day outfits, suits, or day dresses, some wore slacks. I believe the mother of the groom wore a informal dress with a cardigan. Some wore beautiful traditional korean robes. But...the wedding party was in tuxedos! So it was actually a black tie wedding....but nobody knew it! This is an awfully long post, but perhaps day weddings are more formal than they used to be. I think the point is, if you are having a formal day wedding, ie, black tie, let people know. If the groom is wearing a sports coat and khakis, also let people know.

Re: Friday night wedding dress vs. Saturday night dress
I hope this helps.
Q: Is there a rule for the start time of a black-tie wedding? I'm getting married in June, when sunlight will last well past 8 p.m. Is it OK to ask guests to don black-tie attire if my ceremony starts at 5 p.m.?
A: Traditionally, etiquette dictates that black-tie is only appropriate after 6 p.m., but nowadays as long as the reception starts around 6 p.m., it's fine to request black-tie — even during the longest days of the year. If you're still uncomfortable with the idea, try tweaking the dress code to 'black-tie optional' or 'black-tie invited.' They both still require guests to dress up, but you won't be breaking any of the hard-and-fast etiquette rules that some of your more traditional guests may adhere to.
Q: I am going to an evening candlelit wedding with my boyfriend who is the best man and will be in tux. What should I wear?
A: Your best bet is to dress in cocktail attire — a nice dress that you would wear to any other formal evening affair. Don't be afraid to wear a black dress: Although it's still not appropriate for a brunch or luncheon wedding, black for a formal evening event never goes out of style. You can go simple and elegant in a nice solid-color shift dress, or add a little color, beading or embroidery if you like.
