Yesterday, my friend and BM was having an engagement party out on LI. I live in Brooklyn so my ride is my fiance. Well, Pat (my fiance) works for Con Ed and the union was threatening to strike. 12 midnight there was an extension called until 2:30. 2:30 another extension...finally 4:30 am we get the call ....no strike....management doesn't need to come in to cover the union guys. Well 6am, they decide to ruin my day! They call him in anyway. Con Ed called all of management in. Who knows why!! But they did. So now, we couldn't go to the engagement party. She gave me such a hard time and was just really nasty to me and is continuing to do so, right now as we speak. I am not by any means happy that he got called in and we couldn't go but what am I gonna do. He either went in or lost his job and loosing his job is not an option and she should know that!!!!
I would totally have been so much nicer and understanding if she couldn't come to our party. I don't drive and had no way of getting out there.
Just needed to vent. I am shocked that she is being as nasty as she is!

I'm so sorry that a) your FH got called into work, b) you couldn't make it to the party and c) that she was nasty to you. Could it be that she just really wanted you there? I'm sure in a few days she'll cool down and understand what happened. (hopeuflly anyway)

Could you have taken a train? I would have been pretty PO'd as well, no offense. I would totally understand that he couldn't come but I would have expected you to make it somehow.

It is not your fault that you could not get a ride. You seem sincerely sorry and she should understand that you are just as disappointed as she is.

Friends can sometimes be a real pain. I just hope she eventually realizes what she did and apologizes.

Taking a train would have taken you forever. She should understand that you couldnt go - its your FH's job for Pete's sake.
Give her a few days to calm down!

By the time we found out it was too late to do anything. The party started at 1 in the afternoon.

I agree... give her a couple of days. However, why don't you drive!???? If you're afraid, I can show you. You should definitely learn to drive... what if an emergency happens & you need to drive?

No mutual friends that could have picked you up, and taken you with them? Or are you the only friend that's far out?

Everyone is on my case to learn how to drive. My mom was severly hurt in an accident when I was 9 and I just can't bring myself behind a wheel. The doctors told me she would die and at 9...that is not an easy thing. I am just really scared!!!

Unfortunately, her fiance is my fiance's friend. She is my friend through him. We got close recently but we don't have any mutual friends except the two of our fiance's.

I'm so sorry you're going through this. If it helps - one of my MOH couldn't stay more than 10 min at our e-party b/c of a prior commitment to her family and this was my MOH. Things come up & people need to learn to be understanding - I mean its not like you missed the wedding

You should DEFINITELY learn to drive. My dad died in a car accident when I was 3½, and I went for my permit when I was 16, and got my license immediately after that. Your fear is only a fear as long as you let it be. I'm really sorry for your mom, but things happen. You could be walking to the train station one morning & still get into a car accident... you never know in life, and you shouldn't limit yourself.
My offer still stands... lol.

Flaca, couldn't you have taken the LIRR?
I understand her being upset. An engagement party is a very important thing. I don't agree with her being nasty because that is uneccesary, but really, you have to think about it. Consider all the planning that went into it.

If I were you I would have found a way to get there. Ask a friend, train, etc.... I would probably be upset if I were her too.

Sorry you couldn't make it... but you definitely tried your best - and you feel horrible about not being able to make it. I think she'll be ok in a few days... I'm sure she knows that you sincerely wanted to be there.

There was truly no way! If I could have, I would have. I couldn't do I didn't. Unfortunately, there was no way! I would not have just not went to her party! They came to our's and we are in their bridal party. I wouldn't do that to her or to him. There was just no way! Sad and unbelievable as it sounds.
I'm sorry but your friend is really insensitive! You would have been there under normal circumstances... and a strike is not just like a minor thing.

Ok. Well if you couldn't be there, then that's that. Your friend will calm down in a few days. But again, try to understand where she is coming from. You would be upset too. I think anyone would be. But I don't think being nasty about it is productive on her part.

You understand how serious this strike was...your dad was called in too. She even went on to say that we made up the strike just to not go! It is just not called for...the things she is saying! But, I do understand she is disappointed...but why can't she be more understanding and at least not be nasty!
