what's your take on friends (who are not in relationships) bringing dates?
One of my best friends just asked if he could bring one of his friends to the wedding (not a girlfriend) and another friend just RSVPed for 2 when I only invited her.
I'm a little taken aback. At this point it doesn't seem like we are going to get close to our max on the room, but its A LOT of money for a friend to bring a 'buddy'.
But then again . . . in my case one of the friends is performing at the wedding and the other is coming from a long distance.
Does everyone just assume friends are bring dates? What are the extenuating circumstances in which you would have friends bring dates?
TIA

Re: friends bringing dates
If you follow etiquette, anyone over 18 should be invited with a guest. It's their choice who they bring. Some people just feel more comfortable with someone they know there and others just want a dance partner. My personal feeling is they should be invited with a guest, its their choice if they decide to bring one or not.

Re: friends bringing dates
I invited single people with dates only if there were not going to be other friends there that they knew. So in my case it was only a few guests since most of my friends know each other. But bringing a 'buddy' when you know other people already at the wedding wouldn't be okay in my book. But what can you say? They will have more fun with the other person so I say let it go.

Re: friends bringing dates
For example, for my wedding, every person who is not married was invited to bring the guest of their choice. I do not care if that guest is a long term significant other, a one night stand, Santa Claus, a friend, or a bum from the subway. This is partly because I am in need of people, as we are struggling to make the minimum of 95. But... I do think that if you specified 'and guest' that the person should be able to bring whoever they want. As for people in which you didn't specify 'and guest' then they should respect that and not ask you. However, if you need to get the the minimum, then it's not a bad idea to let them.

Ugh, that is so frustrating. FH's cousin said he wouldn't come if he couldn't bring a date, meanwhile, there will be tons of single girls there. I feel your pain. We're watching our numbers and budget too.

Yes, I would always invite someone with a guest for a number of reasons. Some people really don't know anyone there, some wouldn't get up and dance unless they had a date, and because, all those years that I was single I would dread the slow songs all night. You are right it can be a lot of money but IMO, I want my guests to have an amazing time and if that means inviting them with guest well then, by George, it's completely worth it.

Re: friends bringing dates
I invited all singles with dates... I totally understand the money concerns, but on the other hand, the bride and groom will be really busy, and it woudl be a lonely 5 hrs if the guest didnt' know anyone well...

I would usually agree with you, but I've been to weddings where people just RSVP for 2 even though they're not in a serious relationship. Usually they are broken up before the wedding and then scramble to find someone new.

Re: friends bringing dates
We invited everyone with a guest. When my sisters girlfriends nephew (who is 18) got the invite he said to me 'Oh now I have to figure out who I am bringing'... Since he is not dating anyone I told him he can come alone and also bribed him to come alone by sending him pics of FH's 17 year old niece. NOW he wont stop asking me about her!

I agree there are some people that do that... but if you are over 18 I still feel like you should have the choice to do that... Just my opinion though

Re: friends bringing dates
We invited all of our friends and cousins with guests. It is hard on the wallet so we had to watch our numbers carefully but we wanted everyone to have the opportunity to bring someone - I thought it was just a lot more fun for them to have someone to party with. I's much rather see them on the dance floor enjoying themselves than sitting down. JMO
