If you were to receive a material gift, something more 'thoughtful' or in some way some financial assistance toward the cost of your BM, expenses (hair, nails, shoes, dress, alterations, etc.) which would you prefer?

Personally, I would appreciate it.

but, from my own experience, it seemed like some of my BMs thought that I SHOULD cover the cost of their hair/shoe dyeing, since I was the one who wanted them done professionally...

Personally, I think that as a Bride if you are asking your bridal party to have their hair and/or makeup professional done, then you should pay for it. Nails won't really show, so I don't think that is as important.

Because that's the way I see it, then I don't think it should count as PART of their thank you gift for being a member of the bridal party.

I know that my girls will be getting their hair done- not by my request, but that is just something that they will do. I don't care what they do about make-up.

I know they will need shoes, since the dress is champagne.

Really the basis of what I am asking is would you prefer to have a gift certficate to a salon to get your hair done, a gift certificate toward the dress and alterations, or would you prefer something more material and personal like jewelry, a spa service etc.

Oh, I misunderstood!

I say, a gift certificate toward wedding day hair styling would be my choice.

but, are you sure that they'll use it to get their hair done on your wedding day, and not some other time? They may think that the gift certificate is theirs to use any time they wish.

I personally would prefer something more thoughtful like the spa service or a thoughtful gift with heartfelt a thank you note, etc -- doesn't have to be expensive.

Being that I have been a BM several times, I expect the expenses of hair & makeup, shoes, etc and don't expect the bride to pay for that stuff -- she has enough to pay for and is also paying for my dinner at the reception. I would just like something that shows she appreciates me being in her wedding party rather than a payment toward something that is already a part of being in the wedding party. That's me though.

ETA: Also... it's nice to walk away with something as a memory of my experience of being in the bridal party. Most of the BPs I've been in we got the jewelry as a gift and that's nice enough for me because everytime I see it or wear it, I am reminded of the wedding I was in. To me it's more about a memento than the monetary value.

Personally, I feel that the spa service and personalized jewelry say much more than the dress and shoes.... It really shows your BP a big TY for putting up with your mondo-bridezilla moments... TRUST me everyone has them!! Good luck!

I did a little of both. I got my BM's pearl necklaces and earrings and paid for their manicures and pedicures.

I gave them the option of having their hair and makeup professionally done and they all went with it.

I got them a good price on their dresses and left it up to them to pick their own shoes.
