Fruit bowls for centerpieces?

We're trying to save money on the flowers and would love to have really low centerpieces not to obstruct the conversation. So I thought that during the summer, perhaps placing a bowl of whole fruits at the table would add color and do the trick. I was thinking of getting a nice bowl/platter and placing a mix of bananas, green/red apples, nectarines and apricots, and perhaps a few other things. What do you guys think? Is it too cheesy or would it work? FIY, we're having a semiformal day reception, and don't want raised flowers.

I think fruit bowls would be perfect. You could even send the fruit home with your guests for a latenight snack in their hotel rooms.

Re: Fruit bowls for centerpieces?

I went to a wedding where they had fruit bowl centerpieces & I thought it was really nice. It was a fall wedding, though, and thefruit was coated in some kind of sparlkely sugury stuff. Also, my FMIL saw on the Today show an idea where you put fruit in a tall vase (like limes, lemons, appels, pears) with some water & then some flowers peaking out of the top. I didn't see it myself, so I'm not sure how it looks. Good luck.

Re: Fruit bowls for centerpieces?

Thats a great idea to save money.

If you want a more 'sleek' looking centerpiece you might want to limit each table to one kind of fruit - like all lemons or apples or pears. You could even name the tables after the kind of fruit you're using.

There are lots of photos on the web of fruit centepieces.

I love that idea! I'm using fruits & veggies & flowers-I think people enjoy seeing something creative on the table, sometimes it gives people something to chat about, I say go for it. There are pics of mine in the link in my profile.
