Frustrated With Doctors! (Very Long Vent)

Frustrated With Doctors! (Very Long Vent)

About a month ago, I went to my PCP because I was experiencing shortness of breath, heart palpitations, and dizziness. She immediately noted some extra heartbeats and started me on some tests, including putting me on a Holter monitor for 24 hours. I was also sent to get an echocardiogram. She wanted me to come back the next week. So I went for the echo and 2 days later went back for my follow-up with my doc. She had no results yet and just wanted to see how I felt. She told me the test results would be in within a week or so and that I should come back the next week. So I did. Again, no test results and no purpose to the visit other than to see how I was feeling. She then decides that she wants to see me in 2 weeks, since she should have all the test results back and wants to do another follow-up. OK, no problem. I've now had 3 visits with her and 1 at the cardiologist (and I was supposed to get a consultation there and never even met with a doctor - just the technician who did the echo).

So I went back after 2 weeks, and she STILL didn't have my results. She called the cardiologist for my echo results and made me wait in the exam room for 10 minutes while she did this (after making me wait 30 minutes after my appt time to see her). She came in, said my results were normal, and made another freaking appointment for me to come back today, but sent me to a pulmonologist in the meantime. Went to the pulmo last week, he said I'm in perfect health and there's probably nothing wrong with me other than a few extra heartbeats, but wants me to come back today for a full pulmonary function test! So I canceled my appt with my doctor for today, and when I called, I asked if they had my heart monitor results and they said that they weren't in yet, and when she went back and checked (after putting me on hold for 5 minutes), she said the place that does the report was behind because of the Jewish holidays. Um, I'm Jewish, too, and I'm not behind on my work, and the holidays were on the weekend and this Monday. W T F? So I told her to have the doctor call me when my results come in. I mean, I know there's likely nothing serious wrong with me, but one month for the results of a HEART monitor??? Don't they know that people freak out when they hear that there's something wrong with their heart that needs to be dealt with?

Went to the pulmo today, had the PFT, and was told that the results were available immediately, but the doctor (who happened to be there when I got there) was not in because he was going to the Yankee game, since he's a diehard fan, and was only stopping in to drop something off! When I asked if he could call me with the results because I have had to take time off from work 5 weeks in a row for doctor appts, and as an attorney, it's not very easy for me to rearrange my schedule, I was told that the doctor likes to have patients come in for the results so he can determine how they're feeling. So I asked for an appt after 4:30 since I work 8:30 to 4:30, and was told that my options were either first thing Tuesday morning at 8:30 or 4:00 in the afternoon any day. There is something drastically wrong with this picture! Do doctors not understand that their patients have to work and that we are professionals as well? Do they think that we can't handle hearing our test results over the phone, especially when you know it's not likely anything serious? Why is it that doctors' time is more valuable than their patients' time?

I am so frustrated and fed up with the lack of respect for my time that I have been dealing with from all of these doctors! I have had to take time off of work to go to these appointments and have to pay money each time, regardless of whether the doctor even does anything! And most of the time, they've been sending me off with no answers and no clue as to what's wrong with me.

GRRRR! Thanks for letting me vent, and especially if you read through this whole thing.

Having spent an inordinate amount of time in various doctors offices during the last 10 months I can completely sympathize with you.

I have to say that my regular doctor and my gyno are really good about getting back to you with results and have no problem doing it over the phone, but the other doctors that I have dealt with were awful. I really think that they don't realize that their patients have lives that don't revolve around spending hours in the doctors office.

I wish I had a suggestion for you. The only thing you might want to do is print out your post and send it to your doctors. Either that or send them a bill for your time!

On another note I am glad that so far everything has been normal and hopefully it will remain that way.

Thanks for the sympathy! I was tempted to send the pulmo a bill last week when they wanted to change the time of my appointment, and then when they made me wait. It was for 3:15 and they called me at 9:45 and asked if I could come in a little earlier because the doctor had an emergency procedure that afternoon. I asked what a little earlier was, and they said 11:45! When I told them it was impossible because I had to be in court, the reaction I got was a surprised, 'Oh!' as if they were shocked that I couldn't just drop everything. They told me to call when I got back from court around 1 and when I did, they said I could come in and they would try to squeeze me in earlier, and I told the ditz that if I was going to be sitting around the office for an hour waiting to see if they could squeeze me in, I'd rather not. She says, 'Why don't you just come in at 3.' Needless to say, the doctor didn't have any emergency procedures because he was there with me until 5:00 and was talking about going home.

I am so sorry you are getting such a run around. I think it's ridiculous that the doctor won't give you results over the phone. I am sure everything is OK or they would be working with you a little more with the appointments or the doctor would get on the phone.

And Wendy, I remember hearing about a business man billing his doctor for his time. He had the first appointment at 9:00 am, was there on time, the doctor showed up after 9.30 so he sent him a bill for his regular billable time at the office

I would love to bill for my time, but none of my clients pay for my services, so I have no hourly rate! Maybe I'll just make one up - $200 an hour sound about right for an attorney?

That sounds about right Or you could ask for $250 but let him bargain you down to $200

My FH always gets a kick out of these stories (sorry). He is going to law school now - but used to work for a dr insurance company and always got a kick out of these stupid drs.

He jokingly said as an attorney you should know when you are getting taken for a ride... (he has a bad sarcastic sense of humour sorry) honestly though he said he used to see so many times when drs NEVER get results they wait for their office staff to get them and then they almost always get lost!

I have had similar times when Drs pull this (esp since mine were all in Manhattan and I was going to Touro - it made it hard to just drop everything and go in when they wanted me to)

Next time he 'insists' on making you come in for the results ask him whether he can spare your insurance company the couple hundred he will bill them and your time and insist on getting it over the phone.

This is why so many dr's get sued - thank god you are healthy - but he could really have had a problem if something went wrong!

That's really horrible!!

From experience, I've learned to become very assertive when it comes to doctors, and really take control of my health myself. It's sad, but they see SO many patients in a day, there's just no such thing as a doctor really getting to know his/her patients anymore, or forming a true caring attitude toward them. It's disgusting.

So sorry you're dealing with this...

PS: Did anyone ever mention that maybe you're symptoms are stress related? The shortness of breath/dizziness/palpitations are very common symptoms of anxiety and stress. Just something to keep in mind if all the results are fine.
