FSIL - BM Dress Question
My FSIL is plus sized. She lives 5 hours away. Should I ask her her dress size before I pick out BM's dresses so I know I dont pick one out that wont fit her or would that be rude?

You can't do it that way - those dresses don't run to size. You can ask for her measurements, but I would ask her if she wanted to come and see/pick dresses one weekend first. If she can't make it, or tells you whatever you want is fine, then ask her for her measurements in order to have the dress ordered.
Well she just got married last year and she would know her approximate size in BM's/Wedding dresses.
She might take offense or she might not. Do you really need her exact size before you pick out the dress? Perhaps you can just ask for dress suggestions for plus sizes when you go shopping. That way you can get ideas without having to make her feel uncomfortable.

she lives upstate and rarely comes down here and I want to make the decision soon.
Each manufacturerer is cut differently - - chest 38 in one might be a size 14 and the other a 16, it's really her measurements that are going to base what size she orders. Why not ask the shop where you're going to order from which way is best?
I'm sort of in the same situation and I'm going for either of 2 options which I'm not sure yet: 1) to pick a color & let everyone get there own dress or 2) find a dress and just make sure it comes in plus sizes. I wouldn't ask her size, I would just make sure the store sells it in plus sizes. I would also consider something that is A-line which tends to look good on everybody, but that is your choice. If you pick a dress from the store, you can just have your FSIL call them with her measurements.
