5 people will add $2000? Is it $400 a head?

FH has an uncle that we wanted to invite, but because he went thru a nasty divorce and isn't seeing anybody since, we made the decision to invite him as a single person

Well we get his response card and in the slot where it says # attending, instead of a #1, he wrote in a #6

So I ask FH what this is all about and he tells me that the uncle is talking to someone online and wants to bring her as his date(never met before) and he wants to bring his 4 children, that he sees 2 times a year because they live with the mother...

I'm flabbergasted! How to people just assume they can bring whomever they want!?

Now I need suggestions on what to do? or how to tell him that either he comes by himself or not at all... if he brings 5 other people, it'll add another $2000.oo onto my budget and Honestly, we DON'T have it

Any suggestions would be great

Jess

Make your FI call him. Tell him you budgeted for him to attend and would LOVE to have him there but you cannot afford to have all 6 attend. It's kind of hard to tell him he can't bring a date though. I'm inviting solo people too but if they have a significant other at the time, I probably won't tell them they have to come alone.

Wow!!! adding 5 people raises your price by $2K?!?!?! Jeez. I thought they had a package deal at Brentwood Country Club.

i would maybe let him bring his date, but be explicit that the children are just not invited.

Maybe I'd play dumb....say something like sometimes people just don't know how to fill out R.S.V.P cards. We would love to invite your children but in order to accommodate everyone, we had to cut out certain things. I hope you understand and will attend anyway.

$2000 for five extra people? At the brentwood cc? That seems kinda steep no?

Honestly- I think any 'adult' should be invited with a guest-- so I would say, you can bring your lady friend, although we originally did not intend to invite you with a guest, we were unaware that you were dating anyone.

Then I would lay down the law on the kids- and say that you are not budgeted for it and he was not invited with his children. Apologize if he was confused and say I am sorry, but we just do not have the space- but we are looking forward to seeing you and meeting your new girlfriend.

no, I'm adding in what the extra cost would be for favors for them and the hand outs from the DJ...
I probably over exxagerated when it came to the price a little bit BUT we still don't have the extra cash..

thanks ladies, I think I know what I will do

i have a family member who would also do that so i'm dreading it but you're going to have to be honest with him. that's 5 extra people that you didn't count on and he can't just assume that he can do that

Honestly, I don't know your FH's relationship with his family but if FH's uncle's children are your FH's first cousins I am very surprised they weren't invited to begin with. Maybe he just assumed they were, or that it was an oversight?
