I had my rings cleaned last Sat and each jeweler told me that platnium rings lose weeght each time they are cleaned/polished. All rings do this but platnium is harder to get the nicks out so you end up losing some of the metal each time you clean and the band shows it. One of th eladies showed her ring and I would have to say I saw with my two eyes what she meant. WOW. Good to know.

Re: FYI platinum rings!
She showed me thatthe band was getting thinner from the polishing. The platinum is harder so it takes alot of polishing to get the nicks out of something to make it smooth and in the process over tme the band gets thinner. Not saying dont get platinum.........she just warned me not to clean any platinum rings i have too often.

Re: FYI platinum rings!
yup! i use to work at a jewlery store... whenever you get the rings polished it takes off some of the metal.. thats why its not recommended so much!...
thats why i just prefer to have the ring cleaned in the ultra sonic to get the stone sparkly and not worry about the band...its not like anyones looking at the back of my hand to see the metal

What about steam cleaned - would that harm it? I've gotten mine steamed twice, thus far.

Re: FYI platinum rings!
Are you sure that its losing platinum when its cleaned and not rhodium? Platinum is dipped in rhodium to make it shiny and that is whats gettting nicked and thats what wears away when you get it cleaned. Or at least thats how I understand it. Rhodium is very cheap and rings can be redipped.
This says it better than I did:
Eternal Platinum jewelry is the perfect choice for a lifetime of everyday wear. Its density and weight make it more durable than other jewelry metals. Platinum does not wear away and holds precious stones firmly and securely. Like all precious metals, platinum scratches. However, the scratch on a platinum piece is merely a displacement of the metal and none of its volume is lost. So, even though wearing it each and every day may leave an impression on the surface, it remains what it was - a symbol for all things eternal.

Re: FYI platinum rings!
What about steaming it? I didnt know you can get it dipped....how do they do that? they just dip the bottom band part? they dont have to remove the stones, do they? (sorry if this sounds like a dumb question)

I understood the same thing Stef. While it appears 'scratched', it actually just 'moves'. So you really aren't losing anything, it's just moving around. This is why, after a while, you'll see a very scratched ring start to smooth out to a pearly buffed finish again. Not shiny, but a dull rich platinum color. My ring has already started to do this and I love it!
