My friend is a MD at a catering hall on Long Island. She MD'd a wedding last weekend where she was not tipped.
Everyone needs to know that generally speaking, the MD fee is their PAY...They split it with the house, but they don't make any other money, or maybe a very small hourly pay. And when they called to ask the B&G if there was a problem, they said everything was great, but that paying for the wedding 'tapped them out' and they couldn't tip her.
Just think about this ladies...people make their livings off our weddings. If your wedding 'taps' you out to the point where you can't afford a TIP, then you're doing something wrong.

Re: FYI: Tipping Maitre D'
I agree they should be tipped. And of course the amount should be based on performance, you give more if they did a great job and less if they didn't. Just like when you go to a restaurant, i'll give the norm tip if they werent that great but tip extra if they were great.
Our Maitre'd did an amazing job and did go above and beyond. Even the day of he surprised us with a bunch of things that we didnt have in our contract and never spoke about, but he did it anyways. HE was always right there and was great to deal with also before the wedding.
They gave us a recommended tip, which i thought was alot but Dh decided to give even a lil more than recommended tip the day of.

i am happy that i read this because i had no idea that you were suppose to tip anyone at the hall. i was under the impression thats why there was a maitre d fee. who else do you have to tip at the RH?

every RH is different. If there is a MD fee in your contract you dont have to tip them again.
Bridal Attendants should be tipped also.

Re: FYI: Tipping Maitre D'
like i mentioned in the other thread. Remember that what you give the maitre'd, they don't keep the whole thing. Most RH's have them split it with the BM you booked with and some RH's they have to split it with even more people. So figure that they only keep a percentage of what you give to them.

I agree!! That is horrible! How can people honestly say something like that with a straight face....I don't care what I had to do to get that money, I would have never skipped out on a well deserved tip!!
That's just wrong! I will say that some places charge you a fortune for maitre d fees, however....and some people just aren't deserving of it!

$5 pp is actually a lot..the norm is $2-$5 pp. I would tip that only if you and DH feel that s/he went above and beyond the call of duty. We tipped ours $4 pp. She was great with everything except one thing which we didn't find out until we went home...but I will be putting that in my review later I do think it is wrong not to tip at all though. The maitre d runs the whole show.... that couple was really rude. All I can say is...karma

Re: FYI: Tipping Maitre D'
My RH put $1.50 pp for MD included right in the contract. Now do I need to give a seperate tip? I think 1.50 is a pretty cheap tip.
