GAME- economy related

If you HAD TO spend $100.- less a month per person... what would you give up?

Re: GAME- economy related

I would stop buying so much coffee....reduce the shopping (notice I can't stop the shopping!)

I should change the cell phone bill to get rid of the text messaging- don't use it all that much.

We don't go out all that often, so I would probably find all the coupons I could and make sure we only went out once a month or so (we do it maybe 3x now and it's usually for a burger, wings, drinks - no fancy dinners for us).

I would get rid of cable (considering doing this now) and get by on basic (I am addicted to the travel channel, tlc, hgtv though so it would be HARD).

I would get rid of my home phone and just use the cell (something else I could do now probably, we only use half of the minutes we have on our cells, and I am the one that uses it the most).

I would start dyeing my hair from a box! Something I am actually considering after the wedding. I am cutting it short and might get it dyed all one color, like a dark blonde (now it's highlighted light blonde, usually half head every 8 weeks, costs me $60 or so each time). I may have my girl do the orginal all over dye job and then start using the root touch up instead.

I really should start doing a few of these things after we are married to save money for a house!

I would

1. stop having my nails done
2. make my own lunches from home
3. cancel things like netflix or extra movie chanels

Kim I am copying you except for 3 I'd say...

3. Drink more often at home and not pay $6,7,8,9,10 whatever for a glass of wine out at a bar lol

We're actually doing this tonight with friends. We may go to the bar for one drink but then we are going back to the house to continue

We cancelled our land line phone because the only people who called it were telemarketers and we just used it for our apt buzzer. When I called to cancel they threw all kinds of things at us, 2 months free, some other perks, but in the end we cancelled because we didnt want to pay even the $20 a month for the basic package after taxes. You should call and say you want to cancel and let them throw things at you.

I'm considering doing that with our DirecTV package but we wouldnt really ever cancel -- but i might ask for a discount

We already do that (usually we start off at someones apt, and then go out) and it saves SOOO much money.

We're also going to try to go out locally (to places in walking distance) rather than places that require a cab. Cabs add up quick!!!

DH just put together a budget and we are trying to take a close look at our spending. (we spent the last month just doing whatever we normally do so we could then analyze it and figure out if we need to make any changes). However, had a lot of one-time expenses (like $1000 for our flights to NY for thanksgiving , my law school textbooks for the semester, my school parking pass for the year, we paid off DH's school loans, etc)

If we had to cut back $100 a month I think the easiest way for us to do it would be grocery shopping. To be honest, I could probably do it just by going to the store without DH (I'm more likely to buy what we need, he's more likely to add random things we dont need into the cart ) but we usually just go to the store and buy whatever, and never clip coupons.

I'm trying to implement a new plan -- we make a grocery list (ingredients for any new recipes we want to try, look in the fridge/pantry and see what we need, anything we want, etc) and write it down -- and then stick to that list once we're in the store, unless it's something we REALLY need or that is REALLY on sale, but make a huge effort to stick to the list. This week the list wasn't too constraining and I told DH he could put anything he wanted on it, but we managed to stick to the list only and not buy any extras. I really think it will help us

I have tried to do this more too. I always make a list, because I will forget what I need otherwise - but then in the store I'm like, oh, that's on sale. Oh, I need that too. But what I do now is get the circular from my store online (stop and shop, but I am sure a lot of the stores do it) and make a list based on what's on sale. I try to buy as many things as I can on sale. If chicken breasts are on sale, I buy them and make something with them that week, even if I wanted pork. I'll wait til the pork's on sale, you know? (Eh that sounds like an innuendo...) It has helped me. Also I have the shopper card (I am sure most people do) and I use the reusable bags - my store takes 5 cents off my bill for each bag I use. Not a lot, but hey, every 25 cents counts right? Plus they hold more than the plastic ones so you need less bags (and for anyone living in an apt. with stairs, you know how much of a pain it is to carry 10 bags into the house), they don't break, they stand up in the car and usually don't roll around because they have that piece of cardboard or whatever on the bottom to make it square, and they are easier to carry.

You know, I have cablevision and i have all three services -- so I don't know if I am getting a discount on something because we have all three, you know? So would it cost MORE not to have it? I think we pay $120 right now for tv, phone and cable. We have hbo that we pay $10 extra for, and I had called a few months ago to complain about the prices and they took off like $15 a month and gave us stars and encore for free. So if we lose the phone, which is like $40 a month I think, will everything else go up? And then I have to change my number with alllll my accounts - credit cards, health insurance, doctors, blah blah. GRRRR we never should have gotten one in the first place.

do you get free movies from that deal? i think my parents have the triple pack (tv, phone, internet) and they also get 2 free movie passes every week to a particular theater for having that package.

they go to movies every week now, and it's totally free when it would normally cost $20

yes, i think we get that through optimum rewards - but we never really go to the movies, so i don't know what the rewards are except for money off your bill. and I think you have to go on like tuesday nights anyhow?

Re: GAME- economy related

we have DirecTV and no special channels (we get food network, mtv, etc but no hbo, movie channels, etc) and we have an HD/DVR package. I think it's somewhere around $70-75ish a month with taxes. our internet is included in our building and we just have our cell phones

its so much better anyways. When you go on friday or saturday, its a zoo at these movie theaters. I like when we can go on a weekday and not deal with that.

So easy....

QUIT SMOKING!!!

6.75 per pack X 4 packs a week (MORE IF I DRINK) X 4 weeks in a month = $108
