Gas Prices Hit Record Highs In Nevada, West Virginia
Ten More States Could Reach Record Highs This Week

By James R. Healey, USA TODAY

(March 3) - Gasoline prices set statewide records Tuesday in Nevada and West Virginia, and new highs were hit throughout heavily populated Southern California as that state pushed to within a penny of its record.

The climb has put the government and private groups on alert for price gouging.

Nationwide, a gallon of unleaded regular averaged $1.705 - 3.2 cents less than the record set last Aug. 30, motorists' club AAA reported Tuesday. Ten states were within 3 cents of their average highs, close enough that they could set records as soon as Wednesday.

Motorists face climbing prices for another two or three weeks, forecasts Fred Rozell, gasoline expert at Oil Price Information Service. 'We'll probably break the record nationally Friday,' he predicts.

The climb has put both the government and private groups on alert for price gouging. The Department of Energy said in a statement Tuesday that 'spikes in gasoline prices are always of concern and something the Department of Energy monitors very closely.'

Motorists who think they've been charged unfairly high prices can report to the government at 800-244-3301 or gaswatch.energy.gov. The Federal Trade Commission investigates complaints of price-gouging.

'We're concerned about prices going so high this early in the year,' says Geoff Sundstrom, spokesman for the national AAA organization. 'Our sense of it is that, for the short term, prices are going to continue going up.' He won't predict how high, though, because 'forecasts about high prices can become self-fulfilling' as stations raise prices because motorists are expecting it.

Prices are rising on fears of shortages and in response to consistently high prices for crude oil from which gasoline is made. Crude oil makes up 48% of the price of gasoline.

West Texas Intermediate crude, the U.S. benchmark also called light, sweet crude, was $36.66 a barrel for April delivery at the close of New York trading Tuesday, down 20 cents from Monday. Oil prices have been higher than that only 33 times in the government's 20-year database. The record: $40.42 in 1990, equivalent to $57.27 today, adjusted for inflation.

Petroleum traders feared shortages after a shipping accident Feb. 21 blocked traffic on the lower Mississippi River, halting gasoline barges trying to get into the Gulf of Mexico and on to Florida. The Coast Guard reopened the river to partial traffic quickly. 'A few stations around Tampa ran out of unleaded, and the terminals were nearly out, but it was a matter of hours' until supplies were normal again, says Tom Kloza, oil analyst at OPIS.

'We've asked all the AAA clubs to keep a sharp eye and report any outages, and we've been in touch with the Department of Energy to share information' if regions run out of gas, Sundstrom says.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration said in recent report: 'Gasoline inventories are below the normal range for this time of year, meaning that should problems occur, there is little available supply immediately on hand either to meet increased demand or to respond to refinery, pipeline or other infrastructure problems that may occur.'

wow - we were told on the news in San Diego...that we have the highest gas prices in the nation

I can't find under $2.20 for regular

there is a campaign (nationwide) to boycott Exxon and Mobil...if they can't sell their gas at these prices...then they will be forced to lower and other companies will follow...

so if you can...try to avoid them...

Motorists Chafing Under a Steady Rise in Gas Prices

By NICK MADIGAN, The New York Times

Gas prices approach $3 in San Francisco.

LOS ANGELES, March 5 — 'This is killing me,' Bob Sherwood, an electrician who spends a lot of time on the road, said on Friday at a Santa Monica gas station after paying $30 to pump 13 gallons of gasoline into his '71 GMC truck.

'I'm working two hours a day just to pay for the gas to get me to and from home,' said Mr. Sherwood, who lives in Castaic, 38 miles north of downtown Los Angeles.

Motorists around the country appear similarly distraught at pump prices, which in many places have soared to record or near-record highs. The national average for regular unleaded gas on Friday was a fraction over $1.71, just below the record of $1.73 set on Aug. 30 last year and up 9.4 cents from a month ago. Some drivers and oil industry analysts see a potential for gas prices this summer to rise to $3 .

'It'll probably drop off in late March or in April, but come summer we may see something else altogether,' said Jeffrey Spring, a spokesman for the Automobile Club of Southern California.

In California as a whole, the average price of regular gas on Friday was almost $2.18, up marginally from the previous day, Mr. Spring said. California now has the highest gasoline prices in the nation.

Reasons for the increases include prices for crude oil, which sold for a high of $37.45 a barrel on Friday on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Worldwide supply of crude appears to be tight, partly because O.P.E.C., the world's largest oil cartel, plans to cut production next month and because of political and industrial turbulence in Venezuela, a major provider of oil for the United States.

In addition, many refineries in the United States are changing over to production of so-called summer fuels, an expensive process in itself, and refinery operators say they are also having to pass on some of the increased costs of producing gasoline with newly mandated levels of oxygenates, primarily ethanol.

On Thursday, Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham told reporters that the Bush administration was 'extremely concerned' about the rising gasoline prices, but did not specify what could be done about them.

Even in Georgia, where gas prices are normally among the lowest in the country, the increases are hitting home. Orval Donoho, 73, who sometimes works part time transporting cars, said the gas prices were cutting into his and his wife's leisure plans.

'We don't go out as much,' he said as he pumped gas at a British Petroleum station in Kennesaw, Ga.

Mr. Donoho said he and his wife will drop plans to attend one of two family reunions in Illinois in June and August. And he will have to think twice, he said, about visiting his sister in Florida. Prices are 'too high and too much,' he said.

In downtown Detroit, Keith Bibbins, 46, complained that prices were 'way too high, too damn high.' He was filling up his Chrysler minivan at a B.P. station where a gallon of regular cost $1.69. A week ago, the price was $1.61.

'Every day I have to drop the kids off at day care and commute to work,' said Mr. Bibbins, whose daily drive from Clinton Township to Detroit and back is about 60 miles, requiring fill-ups, about $30 a tank, twice a week.

Keith Adolph, a 55-year-old Detroit resident, pulled his tractor-trailer into the Speedway gas station at Jefferson Avenue and Chrysler Drive, said he was frustrated by the prices.

'I think it's a big racket,' he said. 'It seemed to me that every summer they found a reason to raise prices. Now it seems every weekend.'

The increases are especially hard on independent truckers, for whom fuel costs are a large part of doing business.

'It's been devastating,' Larry Daniel, president of America's Independent Truckers Association, said from his office in Clinton, Miss. 'If they're lucky, and if they're going downhill with a tail wind, some of these trucks get nine miles to the gallon.'

Gas stations in Southern New Jersey were charging from $1.53 to $1.67 per gallon for regular gas on Friday. And while those numbers have jumped an average of six cents in the last week, according to several gas station attendants, they were still among the lowest in the region, motivating some Pennsylvania drivers to cross the Delaware River to save 10 or 15 cents a gallon.

In Southern Connecticut, where regular unleaded was selling for about $1.69, Mary Shuda, a truck driver from Rice Lake, Wis., stopped at the Pilot Travel Center in Milford. She said she expects gas prices to get worse over the summer.

'It's a sad thing, because people still want their toilet paper and their toothpaste and their Twinkies at the same price that they've always paid, but it costs more to ship out now,' she said as she pumped diesel at $1.79 a gallon. 'Eventually it's going to come back to the customer.'

Jill P. Capuzzo contributed reporting from New Jersey for this article, and Ariel Hart from Atlanta, Ben Lefebvre from Detroit, Jo Napolitano from Chicago and Avi Salzman from New Haven.

When I was in Nevada going back a few years ago in July, gas was that much. And of course you have to pay it because you don't know when the next gas station will be if you are driving through the desert.

I remember getting an e mail not to buy gas on a certain day of the week... Forgot when though.

Re: Gas $3 A gallon WTF.

I got this E-mail:
Subject: Gas War

I hear we are going to hit close to $3.00 a gallon by the summer. Want gasoline prices to come down? We need to take some ntelligent, united action.

Phillip Hollsworth, offered this good idea: This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the 'don't buy gas on a certain day' campaign that was
going around last April or May! The oil companies just laughed at that because
they knew we wouldn't continue to 'hurt' ourselves by refusing to buy gas.
It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. BUT,
whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really
work.
By now you're probably thinking gasoline priced at about $1.50 is super cheap. Me too! It is currently $1.97 for regular unleaded in my town.
Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a gallon of gas is CHEAP at $1.50-$1.75, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the marketplace....not sellers. The only way we are going to see the price of gas come down is if we hit someone in the pocketbook by not purchasing their gas!

And, we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. How? Since we all
rely on our cars, we can't just stop buying gas. But we CAN have an impact on
gas prices if we all act together to force a price war.

Here's the idea: For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY gasoline from the two biggest companies (which now are one), EXXON and MOBIL.
If they are not selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce their prices.
If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit.
But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Exxon
and Mobil gas buyers.
It's really simple to do!!
If each of you send it to, at least, ten more (30 x 10 = 300) ... and
those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000)...and so on,
by the time the message reaches the sixth generation of people, we
will have reached over THREE MILLION
consumers! If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten
friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it
goes one level further, you guessed it..... THREE HUNDRED MILLION
PEOPLE!!!

Again, all you have to do is send this to 10 people.
How long would all that take? If each of us sends this email out to
ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could
conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!!
If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on.

PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE $1.30 RANGE AND
KEEP THEM DOWN.

YES PLEASE BOYCOTT EXXON AND MOBIL!!!

they set prices and others match!!!! It cost $40+ to fill up my Saab...and thats not even an SUV...i can't imagine what that would be like!!!!

the reason the day boycotts don't work is b/c the company doesn't feel it right away...

I did hear on NPR that the fed govt is thining about intervening...as this is price gouging...
