Gas or Oil heat

Gas or Oil heat

does anyone who has lived with both kinds of heat have any opinions on which one is more cost effective and efficient?

Gas is more efficient, and normally, doesn't fluctuate as much as oil. I prefer gas.

that's what I have heard too. it also burns cleaner than oil.

DH and I would LOVE to find a house with gas heat! No deliveries, no negotiating oil contacts every year like my parents do what a PIA!

That's part of the reason why I love NJ... just about everything is gas..

I don't think I could EVER go back to cooking on an electric stove or oven

I do think gas heat is more cost effective, even though gas prices are high right now.

cooking on a gas stove ROCKS!! I would be SO bummed to go back to electric after having a gas stove for almost 6 yrs.

We have oil and I have propane for my stove. I think there are pros and cons to both. I happen to be fine with oil and my stove is gas powered which is great. I also am hooking my fireplace up to the propane and my gas grill, so if you find a house with oil it's not the end of the world. Propane is stupid cheap next to gas or oil. You can even have your dryer propane powered.

As far as it burning cleaner, I have had both and I didn't notice any difference.

Gas prices are higher than oil right now and I kind of like not having LIPA control all of my energy needs. I like that I can negotiate with the oil company. There is no negotiating with LIPA. Also, negotiations are a simple phone call and you get annual maintenance from your oil company. I get 24/7 service if something goes wrong with my heat.

Do you have gas coming into your house for your stove... or do you keep a separate propane tank?

Separate propane, but our house is too far from the street to have the gas line..bummer, but I love the propane. My last two tanks lasted 3 years!

Do you need a propane hook up? I love my propane guy

I can get gas from the street. But I don't think I have a lot of room to place a propane tank. I am in Levittown... no basement. Furnace is in a closet in my kitchen.

My propane tanks are outside on my kitchen wall. If you have gas, then you don't need propane.

The gas is in the street. I don't know how expensive it would be to bring the gas into the house.

I dont intend on converting to gas heat right now. I would just want it for the stove.

I have an electric stove and i am not thrilled with it. I would much prefer gas... but i dont know how involved it would be.

I bet it's not that involved at all for propane. The tank rentals are cheap along with the price of gas.

One of the reasons we loved our house is because of the propane..the house had oil heat. I don't care about anything but the stove. We are going to hook up our fireplace next fall.

Cylinder Express. 631-667-2342. I think they are based in Farmingdale. I believe the guy's name is Anthony. Hard to remember and my records are at home.

Amerigas is another one-but they are a nightmare. I couldn't even get someone on the phone.

Altantic Propane also didn't want my business...morons..

Sorry to hijack!

Thanks for the info. I'll probably give them a call to see what they have to say.
