Gay's in the military?

Why should they have to hide it. I think that is so stupid!

Thoughts.

I definiely don't think anyone should have to hide who they are. However given the culture of our military, I think it's probably safer for them if they DON't say anything. Everyone ahs to shower and change together, and that could make the straight men uncomfortable, and what the real problem is that they may act violently toward a homosexual person. it's totally wrong, but it happens.

And I thought about that. But I was watching a show last night where they were saying that they were kicked out of the military. I think that is so ridiculous.

I work at a military hospital and we are seeing lots of active duty, recently discharged soldiers, and soldiers that are leaving to go to Iraq, it is STRONGLY encouraged that we DO NOT add anything about their sexuality in their medical rcords since it goes to their CO and it can cause them unneeded stress. It's so ridiculous, but I'll help them stay safe any way possible, and if menas leaving a few details out of their chart, I'm on board!!

Bottom line, I'd much rather have a level headed gay soldier than a hot under the collar straight one defending my freedoms any day.

You put it better than I ever could. Excellent point.

it IS ridiculous. There's NO way they should be kicked out! But it's still probably a smart move not to tell anyone. I honestyl don't understand what the grounds are for kiciking them out. I'd like an explanation

Here's my take on their grounds:

If gay men are on the front line, and they have developed relationships with other men also on the front line, perhaps they are concerned that emotions would get in the way of solid decision making. I don't happen to agree but that may be it.

My take on it is:

1) The military is old school in their thinking and they feel that gay men are not 'manly' enough to represent their mission.

2) For legal issues. The CO lets the soldier go since they fear what trauma and abuse th gay soldier may encounter from the other soldiers which could result in heavy discipline and legal action if a gay soldier was brutally beaten or killed because of their sexual orientation. It's better to tak them out of the mix than risk the bad rap.

Regardless, it's ridiculous, I have had some gay friends who were more level headed, organized and strong both morally and physically than most straight men that I know. It all boils down to intimidation and ignorance.
