I was wondering if the reception hall contacts you about picking the menu, getting the direction cards, or picking the cake? Either way, when does this typically occur?

Your reception hall should provide you with a schedule of 'deadlines' when you sign your contract. That way, you know what to expect during your planning. However if they haven't, just give them a call - they should be able to answer these Q's in a second.
Also, a general rule about invitations is that 20-25 extra is enough. This should cover any possible 'B list' invites, last minute additions or even returned invites due to incorrect addresses.

The Watermill told us that we would go there about a month before to discuss the menu (our cake is included). I am going to have them mail me the direction cards, since I'm in queens.
But, I'm not going to leave it up to them to contact me, as I will have lots of questions from now until June and about the ceremony, photographer timing, flower delivery, etc.
I have to mail out 35 invites, so I ordered 50. Hopefully that will be enough. I'm not sure what other brides are doing for extras.
Don't forget you will most likely need an invite for yourself, your parents (keepsakes) as well as your video and photographer because they will use it in pictures and I know personally I don't want them using my keepsake one just in case it gets messed up
They always give you a schedule of when to come in and when to pay.

Hi!! I hope all is going well with your planning! We picked out our cake when we picked our final menu (about a month or so before the wedding), we picked up the place cards at the same time, and I ordered 25 more invites than I needed and I seem to remember that the invitation company sent more that than the 150 I ordered.

I was told as a general rule to order twenty five extra invites and yes most halls set up a final meeting where you do your menu, pick up cards, pay them of course, etc..

lol, I had definitely received the payment schedule and reminders a week or so before they are due...I do believe my reception place gave us verbal directions, but nothing in writing. I will call them and see about the rest though.
As for invites...just wanted to make sure about 20-25 extra would be standard and enough. :)
