Genetic Testing...Did anyone have any experiences they care share?
Well let me start off by saying I am very concerned because my MD informed me that I tested postive for cystic fibrosis. I don't have the disease, however I am a carrier (it's recessive gene). So, now we are waiting for my husband blood results to return, if he is also a carrier we have a 1 in 4 chance of having a baby with the actual disease. The MD told me that 1 in 20 white's carry the trait. I am hoping and praying that my husband is not carrier too. Has anyone else had a similar experience? If, so what was the outcome? In the mean time I am home praying that I will have a 100% healthy baby. My husband blood test should be in next week so keep your fingers crossed for us.

Keeping my finger crossed for ya!!
Although I never had an issue like that during my pregnancy, one of my best friends is currently in the same boat. Both her Inlaws are deaf as well as there siblings. The deafness skipped her husband and his sister so they (Best Friend and Husband) needed to be tested for carriers of the gene. His bloodwork shows he carries the gene and they are waiting on the results of her test. She just found out yesterday that a member of her family a great aunt I think, was born deaf. As this is new info to her she is praying for her results to come back negative. I cannot imagine what the two of you are going through, but I empathize with your anguish. Hoping it all works out for the better!!

My sister's husband has one sibling. A younger sister who is severely mentally retarded. I know when they went for the genetic testing my sister was a wreck. Turns out, my BIL does carry a recessive gene and there was a lot of concern and no guarantees. She has had 4 perfectly healthy children.
I am sorry you have to go through this. But please remember that what is to be will be and you can only pray and keep faith that you will be given the strength in all situations. I am quite sure there will be nothing wrong. Please try not to get too worked up until you know more facts!

I'm sorry I have no information to help you, but just wanted to reassure you that I'm sure everything will be fine. Good luck with your husband's results!

I was tested to see if I was a carrier too. There are many tests that they can do, in utero now to help you find out what is going on with your baby so don't think you will not be given all of the needed information. I am sure this is a very nervous time for you and your DH, but if 1 in 4 is born with this disease that means 3 out of 4 are NOT so you might have nothing to worry about too. Try to remain calm until your DH's blood work comes back.

don't forget every Jewish couple has to be tested for tay sachs (?) and there are many many Jewish babies still born healthy and happy...
but I know its hard waiting!!!

I want to thank everyone for their warm wishes and postive responses. The last week has been an emotional rollercoster ride for my husband and I. We finally got his genetic test results back and he is not a carrier!!! Thank God! Today we are going to our 2nd MD's appointment and my husband is going to tell the doctor to refer to him(my husband) before telling me anything that might have the potential to freak me out, because he can't bear to see me upset and anxious about pending lab results.
