Getting a degree online!

Getting a degree online!

What are your feelings on this? Do you think employers will recognize it.
I want to get a different job and was thinking of taking classes online.
I was wondering if anyone ever did this?

My doctoral these is on online courses and programs! At many schools that have campuses the fact that a course is taken online will not be noted on the transcript so employers will never know unless you choose to tell them. I got my entire master's online through Stony Brook.

There are other schools like the U. of Phoenix that are entirely online (there are some 'campuses', but most students never go to a classroom). From research I have done so far, these colleges are not as widely respected for a variety of reasons.

That's my advice. Even Harvard offers online courses now. Stony Brook only offers online at the Master's level. Still, a degree is great to have, so if your options are an online university or nothing I would go with the online school. From my courses I found that it required more preparation and writing than sitting in class did. You had to prove you were doing the reading by participating more and writing more papers/essays. It was better for me because I am not a big participater in class. Good luck!

BTW, a bunch of SUNYs offer online courses and programs--the website is www.sln.suny.edu

Univerisity of Phoneix is a 'reputable' college
If you are planning long term for things..i would look into possible transfer credits before starting...but i find it very accepting.
Some may not 'agree' but i think its just like any other distance class

Phoneix is a real life school if you ever do graduate, you are welcome to go walk and get your graduation thing in person. most choose not to.

I went to St Leo Univeristy (this school is linked to Villanova) and i easily transfer 2 classes to Dowling College. (This saved me an extra semester and allowed me to graduate quicker)

Good luck with your choice...

As to Stony Brook... all state schools are growing with online classes and distance learning (you show up mabye 5 times a semester to class)

Not all--some are still very opposed to it, but there is headway being made. Stony Brook is not offering any courses at the undergrad level online, and was looking into not even accepting online transfer credits after having several students pay other students to do the courses for them. Phoenix is recognized, yes, but I disagree that the name is as impressive as a more well-known university. Just a matter of opinion--if you're applying for jobs they will look at the whole package, but even when I applied to doctoral programs they were hesitant about the online master's. They were concerned that there was less teamwork in the online forums than in person, and it is more difficult to get to know and work with others as you would in a work environment.

Another alternative is SUNY Empire. I just started. You read the books, write the papers and meet with mentors a few times a month. No classroom. They also will give you credit for life learning experience. You have to write papers on subjects that you have learned about and where you may have some expertise. They will accept up 96 credits this way. You eventually end up with a SUNY degree. It's as good as any SUNY degree. The campus I go to for mentoring sessions is Old Westbury. I do that about every 3 weeks. I will be happy to talk more about it if you want. It's made for working adults.

I agree with your statment...its hard to learn others in the short time frame of the class (generaly 5-8 weeks long).

I took a class at Phoneix (DW took about 6)
and i was not liking it at first but then i settled in. Team grade is more important then your own personal grade. My team of 5 quickly identify objectives, strenghts and weeknesses and were able to all get good grades. We had 1 person which we were worried about but they way its made...the teacher is aware of 'most' things going on.

(my comment and your were the same, just worded differently)

Re: Getting a degree online!

Sorry I didn't mean University of Phoenix was not reputable I just meant not to take any degree programs from those online unknown schools. I think one is called DDI. I know some offer degree programs.
It's better to take classes from a College than one of those online schools.

Thank you all for your help! It is greatly appreciated.

What type of programs/subjects do they offer?

Check out the SUNY web site...

www.sln.suny.edu

It shows Empire's and all other SUNY online or distance programs.

As long as a college is accredited it is the same. Stony Brook=accredited
University of Phoenix=accredited

IMO Once you are out of the Ivy League school all other schools are the same unless you are in a very specific major(microbiology or something)

Even among the SUNYs some are regarded as more difficult/more competitive than others (i.e. to some employers the degree means more). I work at a SUNY, and my parents both work at different SUNYs, and all SUNYs are NOT created equal... The piece of paper from one definitely may mean more than from others. Now I'm not saying that every employer knows which is better/best, but among those of us familiar with the academics of the colleges some are definitely more difficult to get out of, and worth more at the end.

Re: Getting a degree online!

More and more schools are offering online degrees so I don't think their would be a problem with employers recognizing them. I am currently an undergrad at Berkeley College in Manhattan, going for a degree in Business Management. Since I also work full time, I split my semester with onsite and online classes. Berkeley also offers hybrid classes where you attend half the time onsite and half online.
Many people underestimate online courses by thinking they're easy, but they are not! The workload is very heavy!
