I am sure a lot of you may already have a house but, I am only 24 and will be 26 when I get married. Long Island is so expensive and even if FH and I have good jobs (which we will) it seems like we will still be struggling. It is just scary.

I rent in Brooklyn and to buy 1 BR apartments in my 'hood (which is not even that nice) are around 400K!!!
I think New York is a struggle in general!

In my neighborhood and most of LI, the houses they are building are between 600 to 900 thousand. I didn't even mention taxes.

I'll never be able to afford a house on long island - which is why me and fh are leaving and heading south! To Virginia! My friend and her fh are currently looking at a cute 3 br, 1 bath, newly renovted house in Richmond for $175,000.
Could you buy a 1 room shack on long island for that cheap?

FH & I have been looking for a house...We both have great jobs & money saved for a down payment...It is scary to buy a house...I am only 24 & will be 26 when married...FH & I can't leave NY due to our jobs...We know it will be tight in the beginning, but these are the challenges of growing up & being a family...

after much thought we decided against it. we're paying for the wedding and money would be more than tight.

my fi and i are closing on our house in about a week, and are getting married in october. i never in a million years thought we could do it, but we found a house that we both liked, and that we could afford. it will be a bit of a struggle, but i don't think either of us are ready to leave NY yet.
we know it will all be worth it in the end. we saved and saved and saved...that is pretty much it....

Same here! A 1 Bedroom in our neighborhood of Brooklyn is easily 500K. We are looking in North Carolina (just blocks from the beach!) at 3 bedrooms for 100K-I am in shock! Of course, you make less money down South, but the quality of life is immesurable!
We are leaving 1 month after the honeymoon!

I'll be 26 when we get married. We just closed on our condo. It wasn't cheap, but neither of us wanted to move, and renting a nice place would have cost us $1500 a month or so anyway...At least we will get the money back when we sell now...It took A LOT of saving though!

It is very scary...FH and I talk about that all of the time. Right now we are living in an apartment but soon we want to buy a house. We both dont want to move out of state away from our families. LI is sooo expensive

DH and I moved into an 1 BR apartment in Forest Hills, and we plan on staying here for a few years. There's no way we can afford a house on LI yet. I'm a full time grad student, so we're living on one salary. Once I start working full time, we'll think about a house - I really, really want one, but realize that we're young (25 & 26) and have to wait awhile.

Fh and I just bought a house in August. It is possible to do, it will be tight - but we got a great LITTLE house that needed some work. Thank god FH is handy. Today we are finishing refinishing the floors!!
Don't get discouaged you can do - but know it wont be your dream house to start - however you make it into your dream house

It's hard, I would love nothing more than to have a house, I just don't see how it's financially feasable nowadays.
FH and I currently live in a 2 bdrm coop, that my parents own, so we pay them for it, but nothing compared to what ppl pay for rent these days, but I'd like to move out, and the only way we think we could is:
A. move to Florida (plus his family lives out there)
B. get a 2 family house, which is basically an oversized apmt on the floor u stay on...

You can do it, you just have to sacrafice. We are living in the apartment in my parent's basement for about 2 1/2 to 3 years in order to save.

Fh and I are in the process of buying a house in NJ, NY is just not in the price range. Don't get me wrong, most areas in NJ are not too far behind, but we got lucky. If all goes well we will close the week we return from our HM. I'm going to have a busy few weeks ahead of me.
