getting bumped up to first class
Anyone done this before? Our honeymoon air tickets are for coach and I thought it'd be a great surprise to my new husband to have us bumped up to first class. Do I contact the airline in advance or do I wait until that day and just ask the reservation people at check-in? Anyone have any suggestions?

unless you are going to pay for the upgrade you need to wait until checkin. you usually need to be part of their frequent flyer program. some airline, if you are high on their memembership awards status, you can do it a little earlier.

first class - what we did
We just mentioned that we were on our honeymoon when we checked in and US Air bumped us to first class. While we do have frequent flyer accounts we don't fly them all that often so it had nothing to do with being a good customer. I think most airlines will upgrade honeymooners if they have the seats available as long as you ask at check in - get there early to be first to ask. Some may want some proof - since you won't have your marraige license yet, you might want to take a copy of your invitation that would show the date. Good luck!

I used to work for an airline and there are some tricky things involved here. If you are going to pay for the upgrade or even use miles, you have to buy a full-fare ticket which most people do not buy. If you look at your ticket after the flight they will give you a letter. If it is L G and I think Y (maybe others) you CANNOT upgrade. If you are hoping that the airline will do it out of the kindness of their heart, try to make a reservation for a less popular flying day. weekdays for international flights - tues-thurs and sat for domestic. It also helps if you dress very nice - depending on the airline they won''t bump you if you have jeans or shorts on. AND most important - be EXTREMELY nice to the check in agent. If you see room in first class and they don''t bump you up - it could be b/c they don''t have enough meals prepared ahead of time. Hope this helps.Welcome New Vendors
