Getting Dad involved... funny...long...

My dad was not very happy about my wedding (he thinks I'm too young, among many other things.) Until recently, he wouldn't even discuss the wedding (except to tell me that even though he is VERY disappointed with me and not happy with my decision, he would be paying for it simply because of tradition and 'what would people think' if he didn't.)

So, my FH and I decided to try to get him involved by asking for his opinion on some things, including favors. Which we did. He HATED our original plan (personalized wine bottles) and made some other suggestions, but that was it. Well, I just talked to him this morning. He has ordered samples of favors from Greece (that is where he is from) and is having them sent over for me to look at. He did this all on his own, without any prompting from me. I was very impressed and excited that he finally seems to be taking an interest. Things might be turning around.

Just thought I'd share for any of you who might also be having problems with parents.

It sounds like he may be coming around, as you say. I'm glad to hear the news, you must be so happy!! My girlfriend is Greek and her dad is extremely traditional, and old fashioned. He too disapproved of her wedding that is until her now husband pulled him aside, asked for his blessing and told him that he loved his daughter and that he would basically move mountains for her... it worked. They've been happy since. It was pretty rocky in the beginning though!

I think you are handling this VERY well. Instead of causing a fight, you tried to pull him into the plans. If you Dad has a favorite dish you might want to include that with the meal or cocktail hour. Also, tell him that you appreciate any help he wants to offer. How nice of him to do this on his own. I am glad you will be able to work this all out.
