I am VERY interested in the wedding & event planning business. I have been in between Retail and wholesale for 10 years. I am currently working as a store manager and it is just not making me happy. I realize how much joy and excitement I get out of planning my own wedding and helping other brides and I think this is really something I'd like to pursue. However, I have no clue where to start!! Should I just get my tax # and start as an invitation vendor and work my way up from there? Should I ask to work with some of the local event planners in the business to learn the ropes?

Definitely intern somewhere or start out as an office assistant w/an event company. I also suggest getting through your wedding first, before you start planning others, this way you can see 1st person how things go from beginning to end.

Re: getting into EVENT PLANNING
coming from someone who has 10+ years in this business, it is a lot a lot a lot of work. it always seems fun when it is your own, but then when you have to conform to others wishes and wants and demands its very trying on your nervers! you have to be a very organized person, who is willing to listen and do whatever anyone wants, even if you know that it will look not be what you like.
it definatly is a great industry but sometimes i feel like people really dont know what is involved..
