Hi ladies... this is my first post!! I guess this is more of a question for the Jewish brides among us.
My fiance and I found a place we LOVE. But we want to get married in the fall on a Sunday twilight, and the only one they have available is Sept 11 (which we both feel weird about) and Oct 9, the day after Yom Kippur. Do you think that is weird, or a bad idea, or do you think it will be okay? I am observant enough that I fast and would be in temple Friday night and Saturday morning and evening.
It is the ideal day for us since it's a 3 day weekend, and I like the idea of starting off the 'new year' married, but can't decide if it will be a mistake.
Thoughts?

Re: Getting married the day after Yom Kippur
I personally wouldn't want to do it. I know the few days before the wedding I'll be running around, dropping things off at the place and hotel, getting nails done and running last minute errands. I wouldn't want to be in temple and fasting right before. That's just me though.
ETA: I also wouldn't want to get married right before the holidays and be on my HM and miss being with my family for them

I also forgot to mention that it's basically the ideal set up for us, since we ideally wanted the Sunday night of a 3-day weekend.

They don't have the evening free, and one of the things we were really excited about with the venue is how beautiful the outdoor ceremony space looked at night when it is lit up.

I had the same problem..and then there was Simkus Torah and you cannot get married during that time so we choose a later date in Octorber..

Fh and I are both Jewish and we are getting married on 10/9/11, day after the holiday! We got a consensus and most guests dont mind. No one is really orthodox and whoever is is still obviously going to observe the holiday!
I will still fast ,as always, but will be prepared enough to get things done in advance. I am still doing it and its def a personal choice and decision!
Good Luck!!

ITA If you think you will be ok observing the holiday the day before and your gusts wont mind (i know some religious people will not travel during that time period so that may be something to take into consideration if you have OOT guests) then go for it. It is YOUR wedding!!! Personally I would not manage to fast and go to temple knowing i have a zillion things to do. But just be super organized and ask bridal party/friends for help on those days if you need it. I know my florist says I go to him the day before the wedding to look and hold my actual bouquet and the hotel needs the OOT bags etc. but its def do-able

Re: Getting married the day after Yom Kippur
honestly, I probably wouldn't mind attending a wedding like that, but since you're Jewish, I have a feeling your families are too ... and they might have a problem (especially the ones that live farther away and need to travel).
For you as the bride, i would say you'll be stressed out that weekend also. Three days before my wedding was DH's birthday so it was a day we couldn't do any last-minute wedding things ... i was kind of stressed out about it (though it obviously did work out just fine).
HOWEVER, if you really can't do any other day, then go for it your family and friends would understand

Re: Getting married the day after Yom Kippur
we were supposed to get married Columbus Weekend also, but because of Yom Kippur we had to change it to the following weekend (I offered to change it to 2012, and FH freaked out), so now we are the following Sunday in the afternoon. FH's family is not that religious, but they threw a stink fit about the wedding being the day after, so thats the main reason we changed it.

I think if you are having an evening wedding, then it's fine, because people can travel that morning. But if you want a morning wedding, it might be bad because people likely won't travel on the holiday...

Re: Getting married the day after Yom Kippur
I would personally try to separate the wedding from yom kippur especially if your jewish. There are things you and your family would want to do the few days before.. even getting something like nails done wouldn't be allowed on yom kippur. Also... I dont get the day off for yom kippur with my job.. so it won't be a three day weekend for everyone.
It's ultimately up to you.. but you also might have an issue finding a rabbi to marry you on a high holiday.

Re: Getting married the day after Yom Kippur
We are doing evening (starting at 5 or 6 most likely).
As for getting a Rabbi to do it, the date is fine as far as my Rabbi is concerned - he even said that it's considered a good-luck date!
My concern is/was the timing of it and what others thought in terms of getting things done and whatnot. My thinking is we just need to make sure that everything is done beforehand. I can probably even get my nails done early that morning, too.
