gift for MIL...ugh

My wedding is in 11 days (wohoo!). My parents paid for the wedding and we got them a weekend getaway as a gift to show our gratitude. We haven't gotten my FMIL anything yet and frankly I dont really want to. All along I was planning on getting her a little something (maybe around $100), but she has been getting on my nerves lately. she didn't contribute or even offer to contribute to the wedding, even though she has money. and then she came to my bridal shower with no gift and not even a card and sat there and got hammered. lastly, the wedding is black tie and we told her this from the start and she recently showed us her dress and it was short and not even close to black tie- i asked her is maybe she wanted to keep looking for something fancier and she said no and i let it go- being underdressed is her problem, not mine.

this weekend, I was at the mall shopping like crazy to find her a nice gift for the wedding and it occurred to me, why am I getting her anything!!!??? i am thinking of totally skipping her gift altogether....thoughts?

I can totally relate to that feeling, but will it bother your FH? I think it also matters how you plan on presenting the gifts. If you are going to formally give each gift at the rehearsal dinner it would be super awkward if you gave her nothing. But if you give your parents their gift discreetly and not tell her about it and then it wouldn't be so awkward.

Skip it! If my FMIL wasn't contributing she wouldn't be getting anything either. I would definitely give your parents their gift in private then.

I wouldn't make myself crazy over it since it seems like she can't really be bothered to go out of her way for you. If she hasnt contributed anything towards the wedding and has not even gotten you any gifts why should you worry about her? I would get FH involved and ask his opinion, but if anything I would just do maybe a gift card. It takes away the awkwardness of not having a gift to present her, but it doesnt take a lot of time or energy to pick out. I don't think you need to feel obligated though. Gifts should be for those who have helped you along the way with your planning (monetarily or otherwise) and it sounds like shes hasn't so technically a gift would not be necessary.

I'd get her SOMETHING, but don't drive yourself crazy looking for the perfect gift.

you dont want to give her ammo to hold over your head later. be the bigger person and get her a little gift, like a massage or pic frame. nothing crazy but at least you can say you did the right thing and she cant hold it against you.

dont set the tone for your marriage like this, and if its a big deal make your FH straighten her out.

I say get her a picture frame from home goods or kohls and call it a day. Maybe a gift card for a manicure to go with it. Don't go crazy, but I think it's worth it just to keep the peace.

You don't have to do anything extravagant, but I'd definitely do SOMETHING. Always take the high road!
