Ok so we have 4 weddings to attend this year. So if someone gives us like 300 bucks as our gift at our wedding, are we obligated to give the same amount to them as well? I don't know how this works. What I do know is that you should atleast cover your the plate cost for the both of you.

Yes, if they give you $300 then you obligated to give the same amount. That's why I'm glad our wedding is the first of our group of friends b/c then we'll just give back what we got from them.

Re: Gift Giving Etiquette
I would say generally to give what was given, however there is a big difference from a $20k wedding and a $60k wedding and giving the same for both of these weddings may not always work. . On the safe side I would cover you and your guest's plate and add maybe $50 to $100.

Re: Gift Giving Etiquette
for me, i would try my best to give what someone gave me. but if it's not possible (like finances are tight or something) then i try and give as best as possible.
the covering your plate idea is usually good...but sometimes just not feasible. i mean if i'm going to a wedding where i just KNOW ppl paid like $250 a head, i simply can't afford to give $500!!

I agree!
Most people gave us back what we had given them, some adjusted for inflation.
A couple of people gave us less than we had given them... One I know couldn't afford it, I'm not sure about the other one.

I think too much hype is given to gifts. You give what you can reguardless of what they gave. People say you have to give enough to cover your plate or what others gave you but you can't squeeze blood from a rock. You are there to celabrate a marriage not to contribute to a house fund. Don't get me wrong I would love to get money for gifts at my wedding but not if it means my friends or family won't make their mortgage payment this month. KWIM

i agree completely... if $300 is a lot for you there's no reason you should have to give so much. If I'm generous with a gift, its because I can afford to be and I want to, but I certainly wouldn't expect to get that much back, especially not if the person were not really financially able..i'd feel horrible if they did

Re: Gift Giving Etiquette
I think that depending on how long ago the wedding was also plays a role because if they were married 5 years ago and you gave them 250 I think prices go up so I would give 300 .

I agree. I think you should give what you can afford. Some people dont have $300 bucks to give someone for their wedding...and a wedding is about celebration and family...not about presents...
We all know that already. I was just asking what etiquette was.

So you're going based on etiquette versus what people can afford? I guess everyone is different.
Yep, everyone IS different. Not saying I was going with etiquette, I just wanted to know what the proper etiquette was, or what most people do.

Basically, yes you recipricate, even if you feel it wasn't enough, thats why you write everything down when you open envelopes. And generally, yes you are supposed to cover the plates and give a gift, but then again, we have to understand that people also give what they can afford and it shouldn't be broken down into a dollar amount, because maybe they wanted to give more, and they just couldnt afford it. Each person/couple has different financial issues. HTH!
