How much should I give for an engagement party? I said a gift, FH thinks a check but we dont know how much - we arent super close with them but still want to be generous .. Thoughts?
TIA!!
UPDATE ----
After reading these responses and talking with FH we decided to give $100 for the engagement gift and he said we would 'talk about it' regarding the wedding gift .. I'll keep you posted - but Im glad I posted this!! Thanks for all your help

Re: $$ Gift
I saw cash too... they can use the money to help pay for the wedding. I would say $100-$150 if you aren't very close with them
Whoops meant to edit that last one and quoted myself
I said if it's a hall maybe I would give a little more then but remember it's an engagement gift not a wedding gift

exactly, maybe idk maybe I am cheap and have cheap friends but I did NOT get more than $200 from my friends and that was from my super close friends. In all honestly I wouldn't want them to give me more than that. I'd feel bad

We have two engagement parties back to back and our wedding is three months away and Im paying for our entire wedding solo - soooo I cant afford shelling out so much for just an e-party but I dont want to come off as cheap. For the wedding we'd most likely give like $350-400 .. these arent close friends of ours ..
So a bottle of something wrapped isnt good to bring to a hall and put on a gift table?
How about box-o-wine?

Same here ... i think the most i received was $100 (and that was for 2 people). To me, that's fair.
If you want to kick it up a notch, you could do $100 + a couple of cute wedding planning books ro something

Re: $$ Gift
I say give 150-200. we gave 200 to not super close but very good friends for the baby's 1st bday. I thought that was the norm.
and as Barb said I would just find out whats the going rate at the place and then cover the plates along with a samll bonus on top

Re: $$ Gift
From most of our BP we got $200 (and that was including couple where both of them were in the BP). From friends we got some gifts (we registered) that were about $50-100 and cash up to $100.

ITA! For an engagement, that's a lot. I know it's at a hall, but that's their choice. I'd give $150.
