Gifts for out of town weddings

If you go to a wedding that is out of town, which you know doesn't cost anywhere near as much as a NY wedding, how much of a gift do you give?

I always give the same-- no matter what type of wedding.. only dependent upon my relationship with the bride and groom.

same here, if your close to them give what you normally would, if not you can take into consideration that you need a hotel, gas $ etc. It also depends on what kind of facility they are having it at.

Truthfully, I usually give around $100 for an out of town wedding that I attend solo. If I'm an attendant, particularly close with the couple, etc I give a tad more, but in general, that's what I do.

I think $100 - $200 is good depending on how close with them you are.


...but depending on where there from $$$ might be considered poor etiquette. I know in Cali they like things from their registry.

Here in California(LA) if you gave the bride and groom 200 they would probably lose it! Mostly people give gifts. They also usually have cash bars no matter how lavish the wedding so be prepared out of NY.

Wow, very interesting. I will have to keep that in mind if I ever go to a wedding in CA!

Not just in CA -- nearly every out-of-state wedding I've been to has had a cash bar. At those, I usually give a lot less than I do for a NY wedding.

At one wedding, however, I had way too much to drink before writing the check at the reception and gave $200, not realizing that FH had already spent over $75 in drinks that night. The bride sent me a page-long TY for the 'extremely generous' gift!

I was invited to an out of town wedding that I couldn't attend, She was a good friend from grammar school. I sent $150.
