I had no idea until my sister told me yesterday that you have to tip the priest that marries you. I was under the impression with the 'Donation' to the church that I am making covered that. NOT the case. I don't know why I am having such a hard time wrapping my head around this additional tip. My suggested donation is 700!!

$700 thats insane. that's more than my cost to use the church and music.

That's what I'm paying too. I was told how much to tip the alter servers. I will invite the priest to the wedding and maybe give him a thank you card.

We have to 'donate' $600. Music is extra.

Re: Girls getting married in a church
We had to leave a $200 deposit to secure our date & then at the rehearsal need to give two checks.. one for $700 & another for $200. Provided that our ceremony starts on time and nothing is thrown after mass that requires clean-up, church will cost $900 & we'll get the $200 check back. If we don't get the $200 back, then church will cost $1,100 when all is said and done... not including tips.

Re: Girls getting married in a church
YEah, I don't know about tipping the priest...I was told just about the alter servers and my 'donation' was the 950 I am paying to use the church and for music and for my pre-cana. I would double check with someone in the church office just to clarify.

Re: Girls getting married in a church
I guess if you have to tip anyone for your wedding the priest or one performing it should probably be the first priority. It's probably the most impt. part, well to me anyways. We haven't been told an exact amount on how much to tip or donate but its been implied some kind of donation. I'm not sure what is appropriate amount though.

Re: Girls getting married in a church
I understand that the priest plays a very important if not the most important part in your day but my marriage will not be recognized by the catholic church unless I am married in one. I am already giving them 700 in a donation and I will be tipping the altar server(s) and organist. Then hearing what I heard yesterday from my sister, I called all of my friends who have been married in the church to have this confirmed over and over. Just really shocked me!
I posted this not to complain...Just to educate. I am sure many other girls on these boards who are marrying in the church were not aware that this was expected.

My donation is $300.
$700 sounds high to me, but I am getting married in a Presbyterian Church, so it might be different.

Are you kidding me?! Our priest said that the 'suggested' donation was $500, but that we can pay whatever we can afford, so we're paying $200. We will also tip the organist. I can't believe how much some of your churches are asking!

Re: Girls getting married in a church
We didn't have a 'suggested donation'. The fee is $650, but they never mentioned anything about tipping ... hmmmm??

Re: Girls getting married in a church
We are getting married Catholic, and yup, 'donation' to the church, organ lady and priest. I think that's all. I have to double check - around $500 or $600 total.
