Re: Girls, help me!
well my friend was prone to UTI's there are some over the counter meds but BE CAREFUL - my friend had problems and when she let them go she ended up in the emergency room every time with kidney probs.
When he Dr was busy or she was out of town she would call them up, have them call a prescription to a lab close to you and she would give them a 'sample' that they could test and then he dr would give her antibiotics over the phone - then she would see the dr when her apt came around.
I know how uncomfortable they are (just be careful I think the over the counter drugs like uristat (maybe) can alter the test results.
Feel better

I try to drink lots of cranberry juice and wear comfortable pants. Having less pressure on my bladder helps a little.

Re: Girls, help me!
Is there any way possible to make the time to see the doctor? Can your dr. refer you to another doctor that you can see sooner?? One of my friends let a uti go for a while and like someone else mentioned, ended up with more serious kidney problems.
I don't mean to alarm you-I'm sure you'll be fine. Just try to see the doctor as soon as you can.
I've had utis before...can't imagine hanging on for a week. Aren't you in pain????
Get well quick!!!

Call your office up and tell them that are NOT waiting a week to be seen for a UTI (urinary tract infection). That is malpractice waiting to happen. Urostat will take the pain away, but that is not solving the problem just covering it up, and you can wind up with more problems that way. You MUST be treated with antibiotics, there is no way around that. If not you will wind up in the ER with kidney infections or become septic (when an infection spreads into the bloodstream). If you become septic, you will be in the hospital on IV antibiotics for days and LOTS of urinary testing..and by that I dont mean peeing in a cup. Becoming septic could kill you. You also do not want to do damage to your kidneys. Ask someone with kidney problems how they like dialysis or the restrictions they have to follow. Sorry to scare you, but that is possible. I read someone mention yogurt. Sorry, that wont work. That is what you take when you are on antibiotics to avoid a yeast infection, it wont do anything for a UTI. Cranberry juice wont do it either. That may help it, but wont cure it. My advice would be to call again and INSIST that you be seen. If they absolutely refuse, go to the ER and tell them you have had this infection and the doctor refused to treat it. Than I would be looking for another doctor right away. Good luck!

Call your doctor and have them call in a prescription asap. You cannot be without medication for this. You must drink lots of water but you definately need medication asap. The over the counter stuff will only help to relieve you a little bit.

I doubt a doctor will just 'call something in', you have to have a urine test done to see what antibiotics the bacteria will be killed by. Just call and keep on top of it! Its your body.

Definately get checked out. I get frequent UTI's and the last one was so bad that it spread to my kidneys and I had to be hospitalized for a week for IV antibiotics during Christmas-it ****ed! Uristat will only mask the pain shortly but you need some antibiotics like Bactrim.

Re: UTIs
My doctor will often call in a prescription for me since she knows I'm prone to UTIs. Rather than drinking cranberry juice, take cranberry pills - you can get them in any drug store. You don't get the calories or the full feeling from all the juice and you get a higher dose of cranberry. I take them pretty regularly to keep infections from coming up (they're more effective for keeping them away than curing them once here). Uristat should help temporarily. Drink lots of water. I've found baths sometimes will temporarily relieve the pain/pressure.
Very rarely will they go away without any antibiotics. I've tried self treating, but almost always I end up with a prescription.
Cipro is a powerful drug for bad UTIs, but I've been warned by my gyno that there are other effective drugs out there for UTI. The danger of taking cipro is you build up an immunity and then can't use it when you get an infection from something stronger that only cipro can handle (like anthrax for example).
I feel for you - its the worst feeling!

Re: UTIs
I have been hospitalized 3 times from Kidney infections that happened because I let UTI's go untreated. The problem was that I took Uristat or Azo (another OTC) and the symptoms went away but the infection never did.
Each time I was hospitalized I had 104 temp. and had to have Cipro through an IV for almost a week (one of the times it was 10 days)
I have had recurrent UTI's since I was in HS and used to take 1 antibiotic EVERY DAY just to prevent them but have recently gotten them under control(actually haven't had one in about 8 mos!!!). Don't ask me how...it's still a mystery to me....
