Okay, I've never ever been to a wedding in my whole life. My wedding will properly be the first wedding I ever go too. For thoses of you who have been to weddings (okay all of you) what is like to be a guest. How do you feel when you watch the ceremony? How long does it feel? Do you ever get bored? Have you ever gone to a ceremony that was way too short, or way too long? I just want to know what its like to be a guest watching a ceremony. Have you ever gone to a wedding that wasn't of your faith? What was that like? I just want to know what its like to be one of my guest.

It all depends on the wedding. I think for the guests, the shorter ceremonies are better, because yes, long ceremonies can be boring. I have felt uncomfortable in Catholic church weddings, especially if there is a mass. But I just stay quiet and go with the flow.

Re: Girls I could use some help
honestly, I've been to about 9 weddings in the last 3 years. Yes, the cermony can get boring. I find as a guest, a catholic mass (which is what I'm having) and a jewish cermony are the longest. My friends who got married at the hall or another faith, such as methodist or bornagan christian, where short and sweet.
As a guest, the most important things are the FOOD!!, music and, to my mother, the centerpieces.

I agree if the ceremony is too long gets very boring. Definate food and music are important

Re: Girls I could use some help
I've only been to a few in recent years. One was not my faith, and one was interfaith. The interfaith one was my cousin and she had her ceremony at her house in front of just immediate family (parents and siblings only) since her father couldn't leave the house and she wanted to give her away. So, they had a small ceremony for show on the dance floor. It was nice, but it wasn't anything emotional since she had the real one in her home. The other wedding I went to recently was I guess Catholic. It was outside and it was very nice, except I couldn't hear the priest over the wind. For an outdoor ceremony, I'd suggest maybe a clip-on microphone for whoever is doing the ceremony. That one was a perfect length. Honestly 30 mins is pefect. The ceremonies were nice and sweet, but since the brides didn't cry, it wasn't like a lot of emotion was stirred up in me.
Let's see. Receptions are so much fun. My cousin's reception was great. The dancefloor was big, open bar. The food was good, but not amazing. But it was just nice having all my family around and having a good time. I enjoy wedidng more when they are with family. The other one for my coworker, the layout kind of sucked. The guests were in two different rooms and so we didn't eat with the bride and groom. The dancefloor was tiny, and a lot of people just hung out outside for the night. It was fun, but I felt separate from everyone.
It's fun being a guest. The most fun you have though is when you are a guest at a wedding of someone close to you. So if you can do little things to make your family and close friends feel welcome, that's really important. HTH

if it was outside, it wasn't a Catholic Mass, maybe a service.

Oh, yeah. That's true. It was in the ourdoor terrace of the cloisters in MD. So I guess it was a service. But it was a priest I believe who did the ceremony

Re: Girls I could use some help
I have gone to all of the above. When they're long its very boring and tiring, like when I was just on a wedding this memorial day weekend ( very long, and very hot i thought I was going to scream) Those that are not my faith sometimes I'm uncomfortable when talking of God, but then I think its their faith, and its okay. Short ceremonies scare me. Its like they just came out and its over, but all in all, they all no matter who the person is, and if I know them make me want to cry. Especially when the bride come out. Thats when it all comes out

Oh, Bonnie...one more thing as a guest. Please, please make sure wherever you have the reception, they have bathrooms. The wedding at the Cloisters only had outhouses outside, and with wearing a dress and all, it's really uncomfortable for women guests to use them. Also, since we have small bladders, I really didn't want to make use of the open bar, because I'd have to use the outhouses more. Just thought I'd bring this up because some locations that have that midieval feel to them don't have indoor plumbing.

Re: Girls I could use some help
I can remember another ceremony I went to in August in a Methodist church I think, and they had no air conditioning. It was a long ceremony and my dress stuck to me from sitting on the wooden pews (is that the right term? I'm sorry, I was brought up Jewish, now agnostic.). Awful! You can't enjoy a ceremony if you're not at least comfortable in your environment.

Re: Girls I could use some help
I have been to both long and short. The long one was about an hour and a half they had the full catholic mass and it was a friend of mine and she got very emotional, you could feel it, I started to cry myself. The priest she had was great, very upbeat and cool so it wasn't boring and thank god the church had AC.
Short ceremonies are nice too.
Receptions are what make its fun, you dance and eat and party until you just can't move anymore

Thanks girls. Ive been studing pagan ceremonies, and time is an issue. I want to try to keep the guest involved. There is one type of ceremony where select guest get to ask the bride and groom questions. His family is up tight roman catholic (they are uptight for the pope I think) and my fathers family is baptist (ex catholics) and my mothers family is like a band of rebels. So you can you all hear the ticking time bomb? So I'm trying to figure out how long I should let it. Do think an hour? Or should I do a half? Because I got mixed reveiws.

I agree that long ceremonies can be a little tiring, but I respect their faiths so I definitely go with it. I tend to get emotional too, especially if I know the bride really well.
Being a guest is fun, I do notice the food, but I get full rather quickly and I always feel that extra courses are a waste (just IMO, I can't possibly eat all that after CH!), and how the service is. I also notice the DJ or Band.

Full mass ceremonies are so long, and you feel like you are sitting there forever. Half the time you are hungry, because you are waiting for cocktail hour Any ceremony that is no more then an hour.
Out of all the weddings I have been to, I have only been to one full mass ceremony.

It is your day. If FIL can't handle it, so be it. Be true to yourself and your beliefs and do what makes you and your FH happy. If you want to do a full ritual ceremony for an hour, go for it, if you want to do 1/2 hour go for that. Combine the elements that will have meaning for the two of you. If you want, you can consider explaining each ritual as you go along, or not. Your ceremony should be a reflection of the two of you, not your families and their beliefs. Good luck with your decision. Blessed be.
