I thought I had finally decided on my photographer/videographer, however I Just found out that I would have to leave $3000 deposit at signing of the contract. The next payment would be due one month before the wedding and then a small payment due when proofs come in.
IS THIS NORMAL??? Thats a lot of money to hold a contract. If you don't mind posting (or FMing) can you tell me how much deposit your photographer/videographer is asking for??

That does sound like an awful lot... I mean... unless you are getting a very, very big package... my deposit for video was approx 1/4th the amount...

I don't think that is normal. We left a 20% deposit with our photographer which was around $700.

That sounds like a lot of money for a deposit. We left a $1,285 for video and photographer. We have another payment due to the photographer in January, then another payment 2 weeks before the wedding and the balance is not paid until I pick up proofs. Video we do not owe any additional money until 2 weeks before and again balance when I pick up my final video. I am using Art-istic Images and Wedding Cinema.
that is definitely too much - we only payed 300 to secure the date...

We only had to leave 500, which is less than 10 percent of the package.

My deposit was $2500... I pay them another $2500 a week or so before and the balance of $1200 after I've picked the photos for my album. My videographer required a $500 deposit so... I don't think there is anything wrong with the $3000... it really depends on the size/cost of the package you're getting...

Our payment plan is:
20% down (came out to just under 1,000) 30% in September (just paid it) 40% right before the wedding
Final balance due when we recieve our proofs.

Thanks girls!!! I knew it didnt sound too right. I am going to see if she can change it. That is just under half of my full package. I just don't get what you need all that money for before doing ANY services. Its not like they need to buy anything.

Hm that doesnt sound normal - we left 1/3 of our payment. 1/3 is due 1 month before and 1/3 after proofs come in... maybe talk to your photographer about breaking down the payments more. hopefully they can work with you!

that's insane!! ours was 2400 with tax..we left 500, pay 1400 2 weeks before, and 500 when we get our proofs
eta: that was just our photographer..our videographer we left 50, i think 600 the day of the wedding, and 150 when we get the video.

Ditto. We left $825 I think. We have another $1200 due in December, I think $800 due right before the wedding and then a small deposit after when we pick up the proofs.

NO WAY! I gave a $600.00 deposit. I would re-think that photographer! $3000.00 is way too much as a deposit. Sounds like there is a cash flow problem with this studio. It also sounds like you will have 99% of your contract paid prior to getting your albums. BEWARE!

That does sound like a lot of money. We only left 500 for a down payment and the rest of the moneye we have to pay 30percent i think 3 months before the wedding and then the rest of the balance once we get our pictures.
