I know that a lot of you girls here are teachers and I'd like to go into teaching elementary. The thing is right now I work in the events industry (basically wedding planning along with other things). I have a bachelors in Hospitality Management.
I read somewhere that I could just take a certification course and start teaching, but I'm not sure where to go for this.
Any thoughts on where/how I should go about this. I'd love any feedback I could get. Even if you think it's a bad idea for me to switch careers.
Thanks so much.

Hey ladies,
You most certainty can become a teacher. I was an event planner myself & left it b/c I was totally burnt out. I knew that teaching was my passion so I enrolled in St. John's career change program. I was undergrad English (for those of you that aren't I'm not quite sure how it will work for you. You might have to take additional required courses) and now my 2ND year in the program I have filled all the requirements (NYS certification tests, finger printed, violence and abuse courses) and the necessary amount of credits established by ST. John's and I am able w/St. John's backing to start looking for a job. Basically instead of student teaching, you jump right into a paid teaching job. Please feel free to FM if you need any further details or advice.

Re: girls that are teachers. need help...
I would definitely recommend the NYC Teaching Fellows. I was an undergrad English major (though they take all kind of majors), and went through the program. You start teaching right away, NYC pays for your masters and you get full salary and benefits. It was the greatest thing I ever did--I'm in my fourth year teaching now!
FM me if you'd like more info!

I would recommend going into the Teaching Fellows. I know a few people from my school that went through it. They found it to be a good experience. FM me if you need any more help.

You can definitely do it, with some courses and some in-vivo experiences (observations, student teaching), or through a set program like the Fellows. I would be remiss though if I didn't tell you that there's definitely a flood of teachers on the market right now in NY. Especially with the economy, districts are making classes bigger and excising teachers. I don't want to be a bubble burster but do want to make sure you know what you're getting yourself into because I'd hate to see you give up a good paying job and then spend time unemployed. Areas like Special Ed have a slightly greater need. You could also get your feet wet as an aide, or take a course or two to become a TA. This way, you have an 'in' with a district, will get paid, adn will be able to determine if this is what you want to do. You can do this while going back to school.

Your best bet is to contact BOCES. They have a department that aids in helping people get certified. You send your transcrpts and they tell you what to do to get your desired result. Best of luck

ITA with the BOCES recomendation for LI. I'm not familiar with the Fellows program. Keep in mind tho that the education field is saturated with people looking for jobs...and at the moment, there aren't many jobs to be had
