yes. the man at the counter said that the hand cancelling stamp needed to go over the stamp that you'll be putting on the envelope. and if you have 2 stamps, it should touch both

you know when you get mail theres a circle on it that says the date it was mailed-well the envelope goes through a machine to put that on
but instead you can get it hand cancelled to say the date so it doesnt go throw that machine and ruin your invites

So if you dont hand cancel, then they do it through a machine at the post office and its ruins the envelopes? Am I correct?

it could ruin the envelope, I guess it depends how rough the person is

Hate to burst bubbles, but I'm pretty sure they run them through 2 machines if you don't hand cancel...one to cancel and one to sort. If you hand cancel they still run them through the sorting machine.
For what it's worth we did not hand cancel and the invites arrived safely and in one piece.

i specifically asked, they do run through a machine, but not one that squishes the invite to stamp them, just a sorter.
so it is definitely worth it to stamp them yourself
weight the invite, get the proper postage(prob better to order online bc not all post offices have the pretty wedding stamps)
put stamps on and then ask for the stamper.
Also, FYI not all post offices will let you stamp them yourself! so def ask and make sure your post office does. the first one i went to, the lady said ill do it later give me the invites...i said hellllllll no, im not trusting you with100 invites to make sure they all get done!

I put the stamps on before I went. They let me hand cancel it myself. The stamp didn't have to touch the stamp at all. The guy there even helped with some. He told me if I didn't hand cancel them, then he wouldn't get to them until later. Clearly, I didn't want them sitting there waiting so I just stamped them myself!

Forgive me , Im a lil tired today, but is there a way to opt out of this hand cancelling thing, or its a standard thing that has to be done to all mail???

all mail has to be stamped with date and where it came from
you do not have to do it yourself, 'hand cancelling'
you can have the post office do it, but they will run it through a machine, that could potentially crush or damage the invite/envelope.
