If the passport is over a year old then you are going to have to pay a fee to get the name changed. I changed my name about a month ago on mines, and had to bring in the marriage license and two new pictures. (I had to get it expedited so that's why I brought it in). You can do it by mail but you have to send in an original copy of your marriage license.

Yeah I was on those sites. I was wondering if any of you actually went into a place and did it?
I hate mailing stuff some how things always end up lost. lol

I went onto those websites and to me they say you have to mail everything in.
My question was did any of you ladies actual go into a place and do it in person? and if you did where did you go?

I know right. I thought maybe ok I am reading it wrong but to me I went on all the sites you guys posted just now and to me it all seems you have to mail everything in..
I really just want to go in somewhere. I already have my marriage certificate and they said you can get a certified copy of it and mail that in but why should I have to pay $10 for something I already have!!! lol

I dont think you can do anything in person, they both say mail everything.
you can definitely do things in person. Infact both times Ive had to renew my passport I did it in person, never mailed anything bc i also don't feel comfortable mailing in such documents. The passport agency is in the city, can be a little bit of a pain bc you can be there for a while.
Only problem though is that you can only go to the passport agency when you already have a plane ticket and its within 2 weeks of when you are about to leave. However, I wonder if there is an exception for when you change your name. Ive only done it for getting a passport. I definitely would prefer to go in person so i wanna find out too. I haven't changed my passport yet.

YES!! so you feel my pain right? The first time I ever got one we went to like a town hall.... I do not feel comfortable in mailing anything to anyone let alone my personal documents. I called smithtown hall (where we got our marriage licence) and they said they do not do passport renewal :(.
If you find a place let me know :).. only problem is i am on long island. To go into the City would be a treck for me.

i just read the website, it looks like you can only do it in person in the city if u are traveling within 2 weeks. Probably the easiest thing to do is just to do it @ the post office. I wouldnt worry to much about them losing your license since you can easily get another one from the town hall.

I just called and no you can't go in person unless you are going to travel somewhere soon and you have a plane ticket already and can only do it 2 weeks or less from the date you are travelling. Otherwise they say to mail it. And no you don't have to send in your original marriage certificate, it can be a certified copy.
I knew this was going to be the case bc I have gone to the passport agency each time ive gotten my passport and the only way to even get an appointment to go there is to have a plane ticket already and even then it had to be 2 weeks to the day or less. Its an automated message too for the city one and if you dont have a plane ticket then they won't give you an appointment.

They dont make an exception for name changes, I had to wait until I was going to go out of the country to get it changed. I got the passport the next day after I went. They give you all your documents back to you when you go since they check them in front of you. Lori if you dont mind waiting and really want to go in person then just wait until you book your next trip. In total I was there for about 2.5 hours and had to go the next morning to pick it up (in and out).

there is only one official passport agency and its in the city down on hudson street, i went to that one before. It used to be easier bc it used to be on 5th ave and like 56th street or something like that, also went to that one too when i was like 14. And its also a long process, you are there for HOURS when you do this just so you know. Because first you get on a long line and there is ALWAYS a line and wait to go in. THen you have to go to one area where you show them all the necessary documents. Then you go into another room and wait for your number to be called which can take FOREVER, and even after that you go in a smaller room when your number is called, there will be a group of ppl in the smaller room too and then you wait for your name to be called.
