The instructions I just found said to use a 12' doily cut into quarters.

I bought 8' - will it still work or should I go exchange them?

I haven't made mine yet. But I think it should still work.

It should work. I didn't cut mine. I just rolled them up, and glued them together.

I used a glue gun, just to be on the safe side. A small drop will do.
