Girls with FH's in law enforcement

Original post by JennyAPH

So allow me to vent ( i dont do it very often).. but how do you girls do it! My FH just started a job as a corrections officer in May and his hours are ridic. He works days and nights and weekends and apparently all holidays this year! (thanksgiving, christmas eve and day etc)... I just feel like its really starting to bother me because we live together and honestly see eachother (longer than a hello or goodbye kiss) maybe twice a week if we are lucky! Also, since he just started his pay is low and he is working alot of OT so we can save for this wedding!

Anyone else's FH have crazy hours, how do you guys deal with it? i dont want it to cause us to fight so I am trying to stay positive!

ok venting over. Thanks girls

I totally understand the crazy hours and the new job. Which corrections is your FH in Nassau or Suffolk? My FH graduated today actually from Nassau Corrections. He was at NYC corrections before that. I loved when he was in the acedamcy because he had a set sched. and it was good times. He starts next week and now cause he's new his shift changes every week. I got used to his sched. in the city cause it didn't change. We now live together, which we didn't before, so we will see how it goes. He's already talking about OT for more money. I understand what you mean about holiday's as well, but it won't be like that every year. I'm here to talk anytime. We can be lonely together-hahah.

my FH is a police officer. he works 8am-4pm one week, then 4pm-12am the following week. I basically don't see him for 10 days out of every month

Our FH's will be guarding prisoners together while we whine on LIW about them

Re: Girls with FH's in law enforcement

FH is a NYPD officer and he works the 9:30p-6:30a shift. It isn't always perfect, but it also works out for us. When he's at work, I'm sleeping, and when he's sleeping, I'm at work. He gets in around 7:30 and sleeps until about 4, then he gets up and showered etc, and is up and ready to get dinner together by the time I'm out of work at 5. Then we have a few hours to eat and do what we have to or want to and he leaves at like 8 for work, and I start to get myself together and head to bed early for work the next day. It stinks when he sleeps almost all day on weekends when I have off, and I definitely will miss him on holidays, but at the same time I look at it that he's doing something that he loves and makes him happy and the night diff is definitely something that has kept our head above water at times & made our goals of our home and wedding etc more of a reality.... and it's cool for him because he's always going against rushhour haha. The days off 2 days & 3 days alternating is pretty cool too...

I also look at it that FH isn't a morning person so this is a much better shift for him otherwise he'd be late to work & stressing me out nonstop... he sleeps through everything. His precinct offered a 6:30p-3:30a impact shift, now THAT would have messed up any chance for us lol.

Hang in there, sometimes it's stressful and irritating, but it'll work out in the end. I'm surprised at how many of our FH's are police officers!!

Re: Girls with FH's in law enforcement

no law here, but dh lived in San Francisco all through our courtship.
(He is a journalist.)
He worked evenings for much of the time, so it was very hard to talk during the week.
Sometimes he would not be awake until 3-6 pm EST.
Email saved us, every morning I would wake up to a note from him.
I joke that when we are together I miss the cute notes.
He would kill me for writing this, but he used to read part of a book to me over the phone as I was falling asleep.

2 1/2 years later, we will be together for good on TUESDAY!

My DH is not a cop but I know cops and this is something they all have to deal with. ESPECIALLY the first few years, they do work on holidays, they also do get the graveyard shifts but as a rookie you have to just deal with it. Even years later you still deal with the holidays and maybe even the hours.

I understand how hard it can be, but at the same time you knew this is what he would do so you have to expect it and its hard to complain to them after they start doing this bc they will also just feel like 'you knew this is what i wanted to do, and this is part of the job' dont take this wrong way, even when you know to expect it, i am sure it is still very hard. Unfortunately there is nothing he can do about it. I would just make the most out of the time you do have. When you know he is free plan something great for the two of you, this way you do treasure the moments you do have together and always gives you something to look forward to. ALso gives you time to miss eachother which can work in a great way bc it always reminds you how much you love this person and how much you need them in your life.

Espo is 100% right. When I haven't seen FH after his 3-11 shift I am totally psyched to see him!! We love that we get the opportunity to miss eachother!! FH has only been on the job for about 3 years and he can actually get some of the better days off now. The first year is the hardest because they pretty much have no choice to work because all the senior guys get the good days but that will change.

my FH is not yet, but (hopefully) will be a State Trooper soon- and I know it will be hard. My dad is a New York State Trooper, and there were weeks I didn't see him he was at work or sleeping. But eventually their schedule gets a little more regular/normal hours, as they work their way up the 'chain'. The longer they are there they get better picks of holidays as well. If he is lucky often young single guys will cover for the guys with families so they can spend christmas with their family. Hang in there!

hey ladies I hear you all DH is not in law enforcement but he is FDNY. He covers as many shifts as he can bc he is still on probation and wants to do right and help everyone out.

He has been gone since tuesday and tonight hopefully in about 20 mins is the first time I will see him in amost 4 days. Its hard but its what pays the bills so I try to understand that. Its very lonely at times esp. coming from a large family and a noisy home and now being alone all the time. The nights for me are the hardest Its getting better but I will NEVER love being alone.

Re: Girls with FH's in law enforcement

FH is not in law enforcement--he's doing his residency right now and his months in the ER are similar to what you describe. We would see each other about 1-2 a week and it got to the point where we would meet when I got out of work and before he went in to work for dinner.

So, it stunk, but we just made it work by meeting whenever and whereever possible.

Re: Girls with FH's in law enforcement

My FH isnt in law enforcement either but his hours are awful so i feel your pain girls. Hes in M.D. anesthesiology residency.. Ughh he goes in like 5am and comes home about 7-8pm evrey day. Plus he has 25 hour shifts once a week usually on the weekends. We live around the corner from each other and rarely see each other during the week bc even when he gets home at a reasonable time he's studying for some board exam or something or working on some research projects. To make things worse i cant even call him at work because hes in the operating room all day... sorry to vent girls... On the bright side, i guess, he only has 2.5 years left and then things will be infinitely better ( i hope)... We just make the best of the time that we do have together....hang in there girlz
