giving notice
i was planning on giving my job notice tomorrow but then thought that i should do it today to give them more time to find a replacement...i am so nervous, my stomach is in a knot and i don't want to do it... this is my first fulltime job and the first time that i'll be giving notice (other times it was college jobs or internships)...
not sure what i should say, how much detail to give... ugh, this is awful

Re: giving notice
Most places will expect a letter of resignation. I got mine off the internet
.I'm not sure where you work, so it could be different, but a majority of companies (particularly the top level guys) wouldn't hesitate to give their employees the boot if it benefited them in some way. It's always hard because you're worried about the people you're affecting, but you have to do what's best for you. My last job I was worried to quit because I didn't want to put my boss in a bad position, so I put it off a few months and then she ended up quitting and leaving me in the trenches!!! You have to take care of you

Re: giving notice
I wouldn't be all too nervous... just go in there with your written resignation and let them know that a better opportunity had arisen for growth and you would like to epxand your knowledege and move up in your career.then again, I'm not sure if you care to disclose that to them.. you just want to say that you're leaving and here's my formal resignation...
it all depends on your relationship with your boss.

Re: giving notice
okay well I havent done it yet and think i will do it tomorrow...I'm a recruiter -so i hire people so it feels funny to quit... But the thing is that i was just promoted to this position a month ago and am now giving notice - i just feel bad but the new job is a much better opportunity and more money. The worst of it is that my boss said to me last night and this morning that i'm doing a 'great job' and that all of my work isnt going unnoticed... i feel like a scumbag!!

Re: giving notice
Don't worry too much. It is definitely tough but you know you are making the right decision by moving to the new job, you haven't done anything wrong. Just be honest if they ask why you are changing jobs. It is always hard to tell someone you are moving on to a new job but you will get through it and once it's done you will feel so much better.

Re: giving notice
I had to do it once...I apologized and said that I had an offer from a place that lended itself more to my college degree...that I would feel better actively applying the degree-- that way they didn't think I hated the company (which I did! lol) I felt guilty too- but now I'm teaching and I love it!

Just remember that it is not personal and that it is just business. As long as you provide a letter and at least 2 weeks notice you have no reason to feel guilty. Those are the industry standards. My FH always told me it doesn't pay to be 'loyal' to a company because they will turn around and lay you off in a second if they needed to...because that is the nature of business. That's not to say that you shouldn't do things ethically, but for example he worked his butt off for his last company and they laid him off with absolutely NO warning or indicators at all...and he's still looking for a job...nice timing! haha
