Giving up on finding an elegant place on LI, looking to Westchester - advice?

Hi everyone,

I like many other newbies have been reading your posts and using them to guide me in the right direction. You guys have been on the money so far. But I still haven't found 'the place'! So, I've decided to make my first post because I feel like I must be missing something.

In LI (Nassau), I've visited:
Swan Club - unprofessional, grounds A+
Sans Souci - great, but tight
Harbor Club - bankruptcy problems?!?! nice otherwise.
Woodbury CC - a step up from the swan, again nice grounds, lots of space, but something shady about the staff
North Ritz Club - so beautiful and modern, a bit big gor my # of guests
George Washington Manor - nice for a brunch or day wedding, kind of country with eh food.

Impossible Mission?
115 guests (125 to stretch it if need be) Sunday PM $75-95pp
1-2 weddings at a time
Want something elegant, not all events in the same room, some nice grounds at least, a separate chapel area would be great. Between April/October of '05

I'm thinking of moving the search north to New Rochelle in Westchester. Fountainhead, Surf Club, VIP, and Glenn Island look really nice and sound like they have good food. But are they in my price range???

Is there anyone with Westchester exp. they can share or know any more LI (Nassau) places? Any help would be wonderful b/c this is driving me nuts and I may drive up to Westchester today but is it worth it? Please post or FM me if you have any ideas...If you have any questions about the places I've seen I'd be happy to share too!

Sorry you are having a tough time finding a place. You thought the staff was shady? I dont know who you saw there but my dad can smell a 'rat' a mile away and he loved the staff.

Yeah I figured Glenn Island was the most expensive of the bunch. I've read those price ranges and you know how they start at $70 (or whatever) and can go up so high. The bottom price is never what quote I get, it must be for the DEAD of winter with 200+ guests or something.

I've been told so many times that I'd have to MAKE UP in $ for my low number of guests. I want to find somewhere that's not a sardine can for my 110-125 guests. C'mon, that's a respectable amt of people :) That's no backyard BBQ. I need a room! :) And Sunday isn't even a HOT day, so I'm wondering why it's so difficult...

Anyway I'd be willing to pay more, like $100+ a head if I can get a nice ceremony space on premises. Fountainhead has a skylight chapel that looks good.

Hi,

I know what you mean...but keep looking as far as Westchester, when I was doing my search, I did look at the Fountainhead, and Glen Island...
Fountainhead was charging with cocktail, dinner, and venetian hr. $170 a head (dats with tax) for a saturday night in May

Glen Island, wanted $205 a head on a sat. nite in may...for cocktail, dinner and venetian...however its totally not worth it...especially since a friend of mine just went to a wedding there, and they ran out of cofffee! but I will say that Glen Island was the most beautiful of all the halls..

and from other friends, I've heard that VIP charges about 160, and Surf club is about 160-170

FYI- these are all with venetian and taxes included.....best of luck!!!

About 'Did you try the Crest Hollow Country Club? What about Leonards? Chateau Briand? Fox Hollow? Westbury Manor? Russo's?'

Leonard's and Chateau Briand (esp. not this one) are not our style and look too busy.

Russo's (from what I've read doesn't look like it's in our $ range) isn't it $100 +

I visited Fox Hollow's site and you're right maybe I should check them out. It looks more country than weddingish to me from the site...

Looked at the Westbury Manor's website... ...it looks like that big MANOR ROOM is the only one...or the library? no dance floor?

Unfortunately, a lot of people on here compare Crest Hollow and Woodbury CC...that doesn't help and that food poisoning article (though old)...I dunno...is it really nice?

Thank you so much for your thoughts everybody! I cannot wait to get this done!!!! You're all so helpful!

Beckwithe Pointe is very nice but $95 on a Friday night + tax and grats.

Try Marina Del Ray in the Bronx in Throggs Neck. Someone on here said the service was so-so but it may have been an isolated incident (do a search, it's a recent post, address the issue if you decide you like the place).

But I think you missed out on alot of nice places on LI.

Mr. Hostility has a huge thread about reception halls. Do a search on his name and see what you find. Alot of girls gave him ideas of places and maybe you can check those out. I think the Riviera in Massapequa holds up to 115.

That post was mine and if you have any questions I can answer them,... unfortunatly I dont think its an isolated incident since someone else on here had the same problem and other people I have talked to that have been there recently

Confused...isn't John Anthony's the one in bankruptcy proceedings along with Harbor Club...otherwise, we would have kept Harbor Club in the running...

PS I know about Mr Hostility and have searched so many posts...so I decided to start up my own.

I think they are selling it or sold it and the new owners are keeping it the same as it is now... I know a few people getting married there in 05 and so far no problems

I'll be honest with you. I have my company christmas party at the Crest Hollow every year and I love the food. It has a contemporary look, and although I LOVE the woodbury country club (my date was booked), you cannot compare them with each other, because they are totally different. How far out to the island can you go? If you willing to drive to suffolk I HIGHLY recommend the vanderbilt mansion. check their website if your curious. This place is amazing. BTW - if you need more suggestions, I've visited just about every catering hall on long island!!!

PS - Congratulations and welcome to the boards!!

As for LI, I think you should talk to the Woodlands (at Oyster Bay CC). The place is absolutely spectacular, totally re-finished and re-furbished, and very elegant. They do one wedding at a time, and the event would move between a number of different rooms.

At least give them a call to see if they are in your price range for a Sunday. I think they are around $140-150pp for a Saturday night, so I could definitely see them being alot less for Sunday, especially if you can be flexible on the month/date.

It seems like Riviera in Massapequa would be perfect. its one wedding at a time on the water and hold that amoutn and the price is inyour range.
Good Luck
