Going blonder.

Okay so that's what color my hair is now.

I'd really like for it to be like...

Maybe a little darker than that.

I've gone blonder before but that was back in the days of abusing my hair via box coloring. I want to do it the right way this time. But I've tried unsucessfully... where my hair just doesn't come out as light as I wanted it to even though I showed the girl at the salon what I was aiming for.

For you out there who go lighter... anything I need to know about conveying my desired color or what I need to do so that my hair doesn't end up looking brassy or... gross fake-blonde.

Or any input -- is that color too light for me? If yes, any recommendations of what color?

I started my 'going lighter' transition last year. When you do highlights (which look a lot nicer than just brushing your head with bleach), make sure you get some kind of 'violet' shampoo. It's highly recommended for maintaining the blond color and preventing it from getting brassy.

Also, I don't do highlights every 2-3 months, I do it every 6 or so. In between highlight appointments, My colorist puts color on my roots, the lightest she can go without bleaching my head and it works really well.
Not going to lie, I have broken hair and fly-aways, but not as many as when i did my highlights every 2-3 months. The color inbetween really helps!

I love your color now, but I completely understand the want/need for 'going lighter.' Hell, I'm right there with you!

do you think i'll be better off just doing more highlights rather than all over?

i think your hair is lighter than hers now! i think you'd be better off going with lighter highlights so you have some contrast... highlights will still ighten it up but it will have some depth and texture that you wouldn't get with all over color!
