Don't forget to bring pics of hairstyles that you like. Someone had recommended in a prior posting that you wear white (or ivory) to get an even better idea of how it will look that day...I thought that was an excellent idea.
Can't help you with the tipping...I have yet to go for my trial and I'm not sure about tipping either.

I tipped about 20%. I also brought pics of my dress, at the request of Jennifer (Fairytale Makeovers). She wanted to be sure the style of my dress wouldn't clash with the hairstyle I wanted.

i had a strapless dress so wore a white tube top and that gave me an idea.. aside from the headpiece and veil. if it's not strapless, my first hair trial person gave me the idea of taking an old white tee shirt and cutting to the style of the necline of you dress. bring plenty of pix and a digial camera as well so you can see it over and over. i wound up changing my style after seeing it in pics. good luck!
