Umm, does anyones FH or DH think that going out to dinner is a complete waste of money? I am so tired of hearing that going out to dinner is expensive, waste of money, its much nicer to eat at home, etc. DUH, of course its nicer for him to eat home, he dosent spend any money and I am the one who cooks!
Believe me, we arent scraping money together. He just thinks going out and spending 100 bucks for dinner is something you shouldnt do all the time, and I agree. But honestly, besides going to a movie or bar/club, what the hell else is there to do on the weekend? He is not chea by any stretch of the word. We have a beautiful house, nice cars, and everything we own is top of the line. P.S. Im not bragging, im just trying to justify all of this.
Any thoughts?

Re: Going out to dinner-FH is being a jerk
i dunno..i see both sides but i a in a different position then you.
1. we are saving and looking for a house...so spending 100 on dinner every weekend would be a lot for us
2. we do go out to dinner usually friday and sat. And i agree with the cooking ting (even though i am not the one who cooks). I think it is fun and enjoyable...I would hate sitting in for dinner every weekend.
We just do it cheaper..going to places like outback... We usually go to more expensive places on occassion...But not a weekend thing
But i guess if you are living comfortably..well then i don't see the harm

I think he was just being a jerk. He likes going out to fancy dinners, but says going out to places like Applebees is a waste of time, because they food ***** and you still end up spending 70 bucks.
Sh*t, maybes hes right...LOL

we don't go out to eat alot. we enjoy cooking at home. we'll order in once in a while. when we do go out, we go to a plaster gallery. its an enjoyable afternoon out. at least when u cook at home, u don't here kids running around like u may see in a diner.

Re: Going out to dinner-FH is being a jerk
MY DH definitely feels that way and so do I sometimes, especially if we go somewhere and it's not that good and think wow I could have made something better at home for this price.
We have the entertainment book and try to use that to make going out to eat less expensive or use coupons that I come across. I am not cheap but eating out is overpriced to beging with.
All that said I would definitely eat out more than he would because I like trying different kinds of foods and different restaurants where DH is a pretty simple guy when it comes to food.

I am going to have to agree with your FH. If you are going to spend money on dinner, Applebee's isn't the place to do it. You get more for your money eating in a diner and for the most part, the food is better.

I'm usually the one against going out to dinner . He suggests it and I always tell him it costs too much money! But we save it for special occasions...and usually use gift certificates

We go out a lot, but we like it both ways. It's part of our entertainment. We both work two jobs (one we have to one we want to) and we look at that as our decompressing time.
We also cook together and that's fun too, but it stinks to have to clean up!

Re: Going out to dinner-FH is being a jerk
before we had all of this financial difficulty, we had a $150/month 'eating out' budget..and that included anything, if it was pizza or a fancy dinner it was within that earmarked $150..we really hardly ever spent it anyway though.
FH and I both really enjoy eating out. It's so much more relaxing, and it's a 'date' that way

Re: Going out to dinner-FH is being a jerk
There are places you can go to that are inexpensive that are good. For example: diners, inexpensive Italian restaurants and pizza places, chinese, and some of the better chain restaurants if you dont' go crazy on apps, drinks and deserts.
We think its nice once in a while to treat ourselves to a nice dinner. We usually do it for a special occasion like someone's birthday, anniversaries, Valentine's Day etc.
We go out usually 2 times a week. His parents are very nice and take us out once a week (but they are not really cooks so that is there way of treating us to a meal).

Re: Going out to dinner-FH is being a jerk
We used to go out or order in a lot during my last semester of grad school, but now we are trying to save and go by the 'quality over quantity' thing. We go out less often but pick good places.
But as 1017Bride pointed out, there are lots of places with good food that aren't fancy. There are a few casual Italian places especially that have outstanding food where DH and I can both eat for like $25!

Re: Going out to dinner-FH is being a jerk
Me and Don made a deal, I will cook Monday through Friday and he has to take me out to eat on Saturdays. We usually go to the local diner or we will order in Chinese. We usually dont spend more than $50 when we eat out.

Re: Going out to dinner-FH is being a jerk
We usually don't spend more than $40 or 50 eating out. We try to get early bird deals, etc., and don't drink wine or drinks out to keep the bills down. We go out to eat once a week or so, order food maybe 2 times a week. I understand his point about it getting expensive if you are spending $100 a meal...
ETA: If I was incredibly rich (or, actually just rich), I guess I wouldn't consider money as much, so if you have an amazing house and top of the line cars and no need to save, I would tell him he is being stingy about it. I'm 26, but I certainly hope when we are 50 we have enough money to eat out as much as we would want to.

Re: Going out to dinner-FH is being a jerk
we go out 1-2 times a week - friday we stay in and order chinese or gyros or pizza or whatever. saturdays , even if we go out, we will cap it at one drink and an entree each- MAYBE splurge and split an appetizer. With that, the bill is about 60-70.
we buy about 6-8 bottles of $10-15 wine a month, and after dinner, we drink the wine at home instead of adding lots of expensive drinks to a tab or ordering wine at the restaurant.
If you eat out like that instead of spening 100+ dollars- you can have more money at the end of the week and your dh wont feel bad about going out.
I have sooo many places i can recommend that will give you great meals under $75 - you just have to know how/what to order.

Re: Going out to dinner-FH is being a jerk
My DH and your FH might just be related. Seriously, it's like pulling teeth to get this man to take me out to dinner. I finally got him to go to Don Juan's with me on Friday...
I love trying new restaurants and new foods and really, so does he but for some reason i can rarely ever get him to want to go out. He's just lazy, I think and prefers to stay home and eat. It's also the money too but sometimes what he wants to eat at home costs almost as much as going out anyway!!
