good movies based on great books...

since talking about 'midnight in the garden of good & evil'

I thought we could talk about books that had pretty good movies made from them..

I'll preface it by saying that the book is always better...but some movies are great...

**gone with the wind, margret mitchell
**misery, stephen king
**shawshank, SK
**body/stand by me, SK
**lord of the rings, JRR Tolkien (at least 2 books)
**bridget jones

anyone else have others to add?

I usually like the book more than the movie...

The Shining was a great, scary book and I think, made an equally awesome movie.

Also-

The Prince of Tides

Rebecca

The World According to Garp

of course, Gone With the Wind

The worst book The Talented Mr. Ripley made a great movie. That is the first time I hated the book and loved the movie.
Jaws is a great movie, great book. Lord of the Rings (never read the books) but I love the movies. I didn't think the YaYa Sisterhood was a good movie, but heard great things about the book.

ohhh...Jaws was great too...I read it right before I went to Marthas Vineyard years ago...and I even though it takes place on a fictitious LI island...it was filmed in MV and I refused to go in the water passed my waste!!!

Erica- did you know that most shark attacks happen in less than 3 feet of water? It's true.

IT-Stephen King.
I am a HUGE Stephen King fan. The clown was exactly how I had envisioned him to be.

Loved Ya-Ya sisterhood book, I agree the movie was a terrible rendition!

How about:

Lord of the Rings (enjoyed both) oh this was said- sorry
Catch me if you can ( I loved the movie, havent read book)
The Accidental Tourist (loved this book, movies wasnt bad either)
Interview with the Vampire - (I love anne rice) liked the book, hated the movie.

Re: good movies based on great books...

I think I can say that EVERY SINGLE MOVIE made from a Stephen King book was aweful!

The Shining was loosely based on the book so I dont count that one since the movie is so different.

I love Stephen King but its not possible to make a good movie out one of his books! I hate that!
