Good things do come around (kinda long .. sorry) Good Karma
I just had to share:
With all the Charity work I’ve been involved in during the last few months and especially over the last few weeks with Xmas and all, I’ve been exhausted. I understand how others say “not now” but I just can’t find the heart to say no.
So anyway I’ve been running myself into the ground with this stuff. For Xmas Eve I was asked to help out with Children coming in for a Xmas party at the office. Unlike the other children I’ve helped this year, these children were hardly ‘underprivileged’ but kids are kids and everyone deserves to be a kid. I never got a chance myself so I like to make sure kids get a chance to just be kids, rich or poor.
On Xmas Eve I was NOT feeling well at ALL, pretty much felt like crap warmed over. I had to get up an hour early to get to the office before 8am to set up the registration desks, put on my santa hat and wait for the incoming children. So there was I was cheerfully signing kids in while inside all I can think about is finding a place to either bang my head on or a soft place fall asleep in.
So after a rather nasty father and his children I’m feeling like ‘What the hell *AM* I doing this for?’ when this little girl and her mother walk up. I didn’t sign her in, my co-table person did but I got the goodie bag while he signed her in. I was just standing there holding the bag. Nothing big.
The little girl (3 years old) took one look at me and wiggled out of her coat. Mind you it was raining that morning. Most kids were dying to get out of their coats when they got inside. Her mom took her coat. That little girl’s eyes NEVER left me. I thought she was afraid of me.
She got out of her jacket and walked between the tables set up to register and walked behind the tables to me. I said ‘hello’ and she put her arms up. Well I admit I’m a sucker for good deeds, so I put down the bag of goodies and picked her up. Thinking she probably just doesn’t want to stand and her Mom probably wouldn’t pick her up so she thought she had a sucker in me. Nope.
She put her tiny arms around me and put her head on my shoulder and hung on really tight. This was no ordinary hug this was a heartfelt tear jerker squeeze from a 3 year old to a complete stranger. I looked at her Mom and her and Mom as like “I don’t know, she never does that”.
The little girl hung on so tight. She kept squeezing me like she was really really grateful for something and I have no clue what. I had to talk her into letting go enough so I could see her face. I asked her if she wanted a braclet (we were putting tags on the children) and she nodded yes. I put her down, tagged her, gave her the goodie bag and her Mom tugged her away.
It was eerie. The little girl never said a word. I figure it was good Karma coming around again. All the helpers (four of us) who were registering were looking at me like I was a freak. I just shrugged and said “It must be the hat”.
I gotta admit. It was the only real ‘thank you’ I’ve gotten for all the stuff I’ve done lately for Charity. And honestly, it felt good.
