Got a sewing machine - need help!

Got a sewing machine - need help!

I got a sewing machine for X-Mas, which I asked for and have wanted for a long time, but honestly I have never used one before. I feel totally clueless, I don't even want to take it out of the box because I have no idea where to begin. Do I need lessons (just to figure out how to use it) or is this something I should be able to figure out on my own?

Thanks!

if you have a Joanns by you, check them out to see if they have lessons. Otherwise, check out your local sewing machine store, they may be able to direct you.

where do you live...there are tons of fabric stores that could help you...

also check your adult ed classes nearby...my mom teaches quilting at adult ed...I'm sure others have similar

if you don't want to take a class...just practice sewing pieces of fabric together...make a pillow (square) and continue as you feel more comfortable

sewing is really not that difficult, but I do recommend taking a class if you are very new.

In the meantime, buy a few 'remenants' and follow the manual to practice

Well, I live in Queens....so I guess there are plenty of places I can go....

There's also this place on the Lower East Side called the Make Workshop, and they teach sewing, knitting, crochet, etc, and they offer an 'Introduction to the Sewing Machine' course. I wasn't sure if it would be worth the money to take it, though, so I thought I'd ask you girls first

hi. i'm new to the crafting board, but i love crafts and i have a suggestion that i am sure has been said before. for our first christmas, i wanted to make my then bf, now fh, a stocking. he is jewish so it was going to be his first. i went to an upholstery shop and was given two bags of scraps for free. we are not talking felt or cotton, but real heavy duty stuff that is beautiful!!!!
