Re: Got some news today...

Hiya JennRenee. I have polycystic ovaries as well. Ugh. I got the news about two years ago - well before trying to have children (we still aren't ready). Must be so hard to learn right when you are ready. My doctor's orders were to actually go on birth control pills -- which will hopefully make me more normal and create a window of opportunity when I come off them before I revert to my natural abnormal ways. Most likely though, I'll be going through the whole fertility treatment fun and games. *HUGS* The good news is that this is a fairly common condition -- and with all of the treatments out there we should be able to conceive... it will just take a bit longer and a bit more money.

Re: Got some news today...

JennRenee I too have PCOD. I was diagnosed a few years back, and with my upcoming wedding and wanting to have children soon after, I have had many discussions with my doctors about this. Yes, they do recomend birth control as Valenia said, to create that window of opportunity (my sister had this as well, and the only times she got pregnant was right after coming off the pill). Also, my doctors have suggested starting with Clomid (a very light fertility drug, which does not produce as many multiple births) as a first option. Also, there have been a lot of new studies and trials showing that Glucophage (which is a diabeic med) does help with the symptoms of PCOD and can help to regulate your cycle as well. For anyone who has this there is a great website called www.soulcysters.com. It is like it is here, everyone on there is going through the same thing, and talk about their symptoms, treatments, etc. Also, FYI you should have a gynocologist and an endocronologist (sp) to help with this disease. A lot of gynos only know about birth control to help and are not always up on all the latest studies, etc.. Good luck with everything and if you need anything just let me know. I unfortuntantly know alot about this .

Re: Got some news today...

When do you think it is necessary to involve a endocronologist? I've been very impressed with my gyn so far. Is the endocronologist necessary now or when I'm trying to conceive?

Re: Got some news today...

Is there a special test for PCOD? Does the Gyn do it normally when you tell the Dr. that you are TTC?
My friend has it as well and has two children, but she was diagnosed after she was seeing the Dr. for other reasons, not because she was TTC.

Re: Got some news today...

Valenia - From what I have gathered on the boards at www.soulcysters.com, most feel that an endocrinologist is the best way to go for this treatment as most gynos or internests are not as up to date. Also, the latest studies show this to be a endocrine problem rather than an ovary problem. There are quite a few other symptoms other than the cysts that appear on the ovaries. I really do recomend for anyone with this to check out that web site. There is really some great advise, as well as information from the latest studies, etc on there that are so helpful. I too think my gyno is great, and I have given him a lot of info on this and he had followed up, but again I had to give him the latest info.
Kate - it can be started with a simple blood test, and if that comes back positive they will send you for scans of the ovaries to see if there are any cysts.

Re: Got some news today...

DecBride, Valenia, and everyone else, thank you so very much for your support. It really means so much to me to see that there are other people who have been going living with this.

I was put on the pill almost 7 years ago to regulate my period. In hindsight, it should have been obvious that something was not right, but my doctors suggested the pill as a cure all. I've now been off the pill for over a year. Had I known that I had PCOS, I would have stayed on it until I was ready for children. I am so angry that my doctors didn't pick up on this back then. According to the reading I've been doing, I have so many of the other symptoms. It kills me to know that ALL of these things, which I complained about, were virtually ignored. They also now recommended that I wait 4 - 6 months before consulting a reproductive endocrinologist, just to see 'what happens naturally'. In the next breath, they said since I'm almost 30, time is of the essence. Well hello??? Which one is it??

Thanks for letting me vent. I really appreciate having this sounding board.
Dec Bride, I will definitely be visiting soulcysters! Thanks!

Re: Got some news today...

JennRenee -I had a similar experience I had a bad gyno who as often as I mentioned the symptoms and could we check it, he either a) just stuck me n the pill- which I got high blood pressure from a lot of them and had to keep coming off and switching, or b ) told me I was wrong and that I did not have this. When I mentioned it to my internist , he did the blood work, and all the subsuquent tests b/c the gyno gave me, well he did this test so let him order that test, etc. (Needless to say I do not use that gyno anymore). Also, do not be afraid to speak up and insist on going to a specialist if that is what you want. It is your health !! That is one thing my internist has always encouraged me to do is to ask a lot of questions, speak up for myself, and if I disagree, tell them so. He said if the dr has a problem with that, than it is time to get a new doctor. Only you know how you feel, they can listen to your symptoms, but you live with them. Keep us updated. Don't worry, I am sure that everything will work out for you.

Re: Got some news today...

I have PCOS too. I gained 30 ponds in a year and a half! Acne and I get my period once a year. I am on Orthostep right now. My acne is gone but am having trouble taking off the weight. My body is producing too much testosterone and androgens. I gained weight in my stomach area like men do when they get a 'beer belly'. My acne was like a beard, aroung jaw bone. Thank God it cleared up! I am getting married Saturday!
I wish you luck and good health
