Got some really depressing news today...

Got some really depressing news today...

My promotion was denied for the 2nd time!

I've been waiting on this promotion for 3 years now. Three years ago my boss shook my hand and said 'Congratulations... you've earned...blah blah blah... I'll be starting your promotion paperwork next week' I had completed a huge project working well outside my job title. Since then, I've basically been doing the job of that title.

When my boss that gave me the promotion to begin with was fired, we discovered that he never really did put the paperwork through. So my new boss pushed it through. It was denied by the higher ups. We reapplied and worked on our approach for the reapplication for months.... everyone was sure it would go through this time. But I just got the word that it was denied again. And they won't give me a reason.

I don't know what to do now... Jim and I were really counting on this promotion to go through before the baby arrived.... I feel like telling them all to kiss my a$$ and drop all my current projects and become a mediocre employee... but that's not me. I can't leave because the benefits are just too good here. But I am so dissappointed... and angry for being strung along for so long...

Thanks for listening.

I'm so sorry!! I would be really frustrated too. I can't believe they wouldn't give you any feedback as to why it was denied. How are you supposed to 'improve' without knowing what they want?

That's awful! Do I remember you saying one time you work for the state or county? Do you have a union you can speak to?

Oh, Im so sorry to hear that. I was in a similar situation, doing the work of the promotion, but not getting the name or $$$$. Worse yet, they gave the promotion to someone else and gave me the lame excuse of seniority. Anyway, I feel your pain girl. Is there any way you can contact HR? At the very least, an explanation is owed to you.

Aww damn I'm so sorry Sandra

At the VERY least I'd want some sort of explanation .. I mean 3 years is long time to be strung along and then given NO reason for being denied your promotion, especially when technically you are doing the job anyhow!!

Hang in there ... but I can imagine how upset you feel about this, especialy with the baby on the way

I would start putting my feelers out. Not that you would accept another position, but it helps when you go back to the 'higher ups' with an offer letter from another company with equal or more pay... Then you state your case.

A down side to doing this - you have to be prepared to leave!

I know your prego - So this may not be an option for you right now, but maybe in the near future?

I have learned the hard way that if you do a job outside 'your scope' not to expect anything! Promised or not. Unfortunately that's just business.

Good Luck - I hope that things work out for you!!

Re: Got some really depressing news today...

It's funny because the first time the promotion was denied I got a very official letter in writing... this time there is nothing. Though my boss's boss claims there is something in writing somewhere but we have yet to see it. There is definitely something else going on in the background and there's no way for me to find out what.

I could try the union but they are essentially useless. They listen to you and go 'wow - you're right, that *****! Let me see what I can do, I'll get back to you!' And of course you never hear from them again.

The superficial reason is that they don't think I'm really doing the job of the higher title despite my 6 pages of documentation supporting that I do coupled with the backing of my boss and several other bosses.

Moral: Trust nothing that isn't in writing.

I'm so sorry...what a lousy way to treat an employee.

Re: Got some really depressing news today...

Have a union rep. request a copy of your personal file from HR. All correspondence will be in there.

Sounds like they like the job your doing, but don't have the money in the budget to make good on the promotion.

Edited for grammar

Do you think your pregnancy has anything to do with the denial? Because if it does, and it sounds like it may, you could sue them.

Hmmm....now there's a thought. But I don't know if the higher ups who denied the promotion even know that I'm pg. I don't know them and I've never met them. The application was re-submitted months before the wedding and the answer just came back now. They always say these things take 4 - 6 months, and surprise, surprise - it always takes 6 months.

Maybe even more so a likely scenario because I'm a woman. Our IT department consists entirely of men, I am the only woman. I also happen to be the only minority. (hey! two token affirmative action quotas met in one person --- ya think!)

That's exactly what I was thinking...
